View Full Version : How is it possible that we get no new developers on board ?

Well, the results form my last inquiry here on Doom9 was a complete joke, we didnt get evne a single reply.

What i am thinking is, is it the high quality of the existing tools ( like mkvtoolnix ) that makes new developers being scared to join us ?

You may wonder why we are so desperate about this, well, most of our core devs are extremely busy with RL issues for the time being, and all at the same time unfortunately :( ..... we really could need some new supporters joining us to make some progress, so that the core devs can concentrate on our next big things to come, like winstreamer and TCME.

Mosu can hopefully care about native MPEG4 once he can work more on mkvtoolnix again, unmei will maybe look into USF muxing ( dont ask me who will do the necessary USF subtitle filter :( ), and spyder will care about MPEG2 in MKV again ( S_O doesnt seem to have the time ).

robux4 is still busy with winstreamer, and Toff has a working TTA muxer filter ready, but there is no decoder filter yet. Guys, we really needed some input from other developers now, any kind of progress would do the project extremely well .....

Wel, I'm sure many people would love to help, but lack the ability to write code. Also I'd think most of the people around these parts that have an interest in MKV would have already tried joining. Perhaps you could invent some sort of spectacular news and get it posted on slashdot, I'm sure that would bring in some freash meat ;p

Some additions on Christian's post...

We actually have a lot of plans for the future. We are not looking for people just to get bigger ;) Nor to steal developpers from other projects. I'll soon (today?) make a summary webpage of all the news we have planned and the approximate time it should take. Hopefully any dev willing to help will pick one of the tasks.

Also I think Doom9 is not a large community enough, at least not from the developper side. We know all devs around here and apart from new ones coming (therefore probably newbies) I don't see it changing anytime soon. So I think we should look elsewhere also... I know Chris knows a lot about all the users' places but devs are a bit different.

Making big news will only help people to know Matroska. But it won't help us to make working softwares that solve existing problems. So IMO we need more than that (although we do need it for people not to forget about us;)).

Video encoding etc is a pretty specialist area, I am a developer, and have never worked in the area, and honestly, dont really want to. The learning curve is to steep for me, (Yes I am old and set in my ways!)I prefer to keep to the areas I am familar with, and can do development work without straining the old brain to much. Comes from being jaded I suppose, but I no longer have that thirst for knowledge about everything!

Also from my point of view I dont need to - the stuff that is already around is more than adequate for my needs. Most developers I know are driven by their own "I can do better than that" or "Jeez I need to be able to do this" views. So I suppose you are at least partially right, although not "scared off" by the quality of what is around, it sure means I dont get motivated to try and do better!

Of course our motivation when doing Matroska was to build something better than anything that was at the time (and I think we did it). But the primary goal was to solve problems of the too common AVI. And now we have some good tools but still many ideas on how to improve them. Not do better than the others (we actually have good internal competition ;)) but to add things you don't find anywhere. And we have lots of ideas.
