self-destructable DVDs

Some sort of alternative to the good old video rental stores, the disk becomes unreadable after 48 hours or so.

Wondering if this technology will make the classic rentals go out of business ... Anyone tried those already? Haven't seen in Europe yet..

What if you sprayed Scotch Guard (TM) on it, or otherwise laminated the disk to protect it from air? No doubt someone will do this and the media will announce something stupid like "Princeton grad student discovers simple way to prevent destruction of self-destructing DVDs."

Self-destructing DVDs aren't a brilliant invention. All DVDs self-destruct when exposed to air. Normal DVDs/CDs just are coated to protect them from air (which works for only years or decades).

Self-destructing DVDs rip the same as regular DVDs.

And, what will keep their popularity down is that they'll want to charge too much for them.
