DVX stands for DVD and DVB and is a .NET based open source encoding frontend with support for a wide range of source and target formats. The application utilizes some of the most powerful and popular video applications like DVD Decrypter, AviSynth, VirtualDubMod, BeSweet, XviD, DVD2AVI and many more.
some benefits:
feature requests are appreciated and applied if possible
no spyware, adware or any other form of malware
open source
fast development (VS 2003 (VB .NET/C#) ;))
rich featured, versatile
customizable, extensible
easy to use
Although there is a support forum everybody is welcome to post here everything related to the application like requesting features, reporting bugs or simply asking if and how something can be done with DVX. The more details I get the easier it will be for me to support it.
please find the website in my signature

PS: I was unsure in which category to post this therefore I wouldn't mind a mod moves this in case a better category is found

how does it work? is the file muxed into .mp4 via the 3ivx muxer directly during encoding? or after the a/v is encoded the muxing happens?
stax76

it's muxed after it's encoded to avi using either VDM or VD. If you know better ways it would be very helpful to post links to the required tools and if it's DShow based to send me the GRF files as well. It's a lot easier for me to change things if I don't have to do research which is very time consuming

hm you could use dshow encoders (as provided by 3ivx (mpeg-4 video and aac audio)), a lame mp3 dshow encoder exists too, for xvid there is also a dshow encoder available, nero also provides an aac and mpeg-4 video encoder...

which applications other than Nero can I examine to get inspiration. I think the current solutions except GraphEdit are all exclusive to the filters of the toolmaker. I'm not sure if the DShow framework is very good for what I'm trying to do with DVX but I will see

all dshow filters are unlimited, except the nero ones

I have second thoughts about 3ivx (trial, right?) and Nero (restricted to Nero.exe?). XviD seem to be the most interesting DShow encoder for now but I couldn't find enough information about it. Do you know where to download it and do you know who is developing it if the package don't include the contact information of the developer

Audio part only. Video works without limitations.

I'll probably wait for a more popular encoder like XviD, DivX or Nero Digital (I assume as soon as it ships bundled with DVD players it will become more popular)

I've uploaded 4.03b, it can be found at SourceForge: https://sourceforge.net/projects/dvx
the changelog is rather small:
removed the DVD2AVI menu with a generic commandline dialog currently used for DVD2AVI and DGIndex which is now supported
new RV10 plugin included
due to a error I made the included plugins have to be moved by hand to the plugin directory in case you are interested in WMV native or RV10. DVX now might be the only application capably of encoding to DivX, XviD, VP6, WMV with VFW and WMV native, RV10, mkv with VDM or mkvmerge, ogm and more.

I've uploaded a alpha build, if you report a bug I'll upload a fix shortly (if I can figure out what's wrong)
http://www.planetdvb.net/dvx/DVX_4.0.4.0.exe
changes:
added option to reset the AviSynth menu in the main dialog
increase bitrate for the AAC preset
changed version naming according to windows standards and changed it to be compiled to the executable
added translation macros to the settings/options, previously settings like menus were translated only when they were created when DVX was started for the first time or when a setting was resetted. Since many settings were outdated because of this I took the opportunity and replaced the code that saves the settings with a version that is easier to use and maintain, all settings and options are gone therefore
removed hardcoded main menu in the main dialog with a customizable menu, the execute/launch feature was removed because the new menu can be used instead. The features are reordering menu items by mouse dragging, reordering menu items as subitem by mouse dragging with Ctrl, creating new menu items, deleting menu items, assinging and changing shortcut keys to menu items, assingning methods to menu items (the action used for the menu item), passing arguments to the methods, methods desriptions and parameter desriptions, reset the entire menu
new source detection script handles different d2v formats
new dialog to manage applications used by DVX including downloading and installing

changed mkvmerge default to AAC HE according to the audio default which is AAC HE as well
changed the icon associated with dvx projects which was the same as the executable
added VSFilter to the application management (paths dialog) which is required for subtitle playback
added 3ivx MP4 muxer to the application management (paths dialog) which is required to mux and playback (splitter) MP4 files
fixed wrong assistent tip when using mkv and AAC

I have nothing spectacular to announce, only a maintenance release
4.0.4.2 (2004-11-21)
fixed: the menu in the AviSynth editor was completely broke because I've forgotten to finish replacing it with a more advanced menu which is now finished.
fixed: FluxSmooth was broke, the new version has new filter names and is available for download in the paths dialog.
fixed: DVX would crash without a proper video source
fixed: the parameter tip window in the AviSynth editor wouldn't close under some circumstances.
added: for the sake of consistency I replaced the menu in the preview as well and while doing so the menu editor and builder was improved as well.
added: option hibernate which is save to disc (standby is saved to ram), needless to say your PC need to support this
added: option to reset the standard project
reseted: the AviSynth scripts
reseted: the AviSynth menu in the main dialog
reseted: the main menu in the main dialog
reseted: the main menu in the AviSynth editor
reseted: the context menu in the preview
many more small improvements

Hello,
Here is a translation of some user testing your last release:
----------------------
I was never able to make a DVX 4.x version working.
so I downloaded this one, I installed it and I ahve the following problems.
When selecting vobs to make a .d2v via DVX and after having downloaded avisynth, pva strum, and so on. At the en I have a small window "avisynth errors"
this renders impossible to crop, preview, and so on with the movie.
when I force I get the "avisynth editor" window with all this:
See the end of this message for details on invoking
just-in-time (JIT) debugging instead of this dialog box.

************** JIT Debugging **************
To enable just in time (JIT) debugging, the config file for this
application or machine (machine.config) must have the
jitDebugging value set in the system.windows.forms section.
The application must also be compiled with debugging
enabled.
For example:
<configuration>
<system.windows.forms jitDebugging="true" />
</configuration>
When JIT debugging is enabled, any unhandled exception
will be sent to the JIT debugger registered on the machine
rather than being handled by this dialog.
I got same issue when trying to make a .d2v from dvd2avi.
when I change the source mode and replace the input script with mpeg2source("something.d2v") instead of the automatic script it doesn't solve the problems.
so I reinstalled 3.56...

changes I remember are the AviSynth script with a new auto source function that loads both DVD2AVI and DGIndex files, there is a newer AviSynth version, DShow was replaced with the avifile API because there was a strange bug I couldn't find that broke COM interop entirely.
I don't know if I can fix this, does the avs files created by DVX load in a DShow based player and in the avifile API based VirtualDub/Mod?
One thing somebody has reported is a incompaible AviSynth plugin that is included in the SysPack of the old version, namely AntiBlink.
Hope this helps

avisynth error and then no go
the avs can neither be opened with media player classic nor vdmod
then it's not directly a bug in DVX, maybe something wrong with the default script or some codec or DShow filter missing. Somebody with little AviSynth knowledge would have to look at it. Does AviSynth work at all? Maybe you can post the created scripts and some AviSynth guru can tell us what could cause problems.
stax76

a search did show it's a common problem related to codecs, which XviD/DivX versions do you have intalled and which AviSynth and DirectX version? I would like to know how to fix this so DVX could remind of this problem.

Some news of the french guy's problem:
AVS files are loading in vdm and wmp without problems.
After reinstalling DVX and SysPack 3.56 and updating every software from within DVX, especially Avisynth 2.56 beta, the avisynth error window doesn't appear anymore :)
You have to be carefull to install avisynth in the syspack directory and not somewhere else !
But: the preview and the cropping window don't work because the previous message still appears everytime.
On the preview windows I choose "continue" and then I can close the preview window
Concerning the crop window, the only solution is to chose "quit" because the other choices bring back the error window everytime.
So the crop window doesn't work AND makes it impossible to continue to use DVX.
I deleted antiblink rom the avisynth's plugin directory and nothing changed.
It seems that only the preview and the crop are problematic as the encoding works without problems.
But of course without the cropping and preview functions there isn't much you can do with DVX.
Here is how it looks like:

I'm a little bit confused now, the SysPack is no longer supported
the crash in the avifile API wrapper assembly likely has to do with the graphics system if other apps don't fail with the scripts. I thought such problems were fixed once and for all, something like this wasn't reported for a very long time. I have here:
DVX 4.0.4.2
Microsoft Windows NT 5.1.2600.0 (XP no SP's (arbitrary crashes with SP2)) with Luna theme
.NET Framework 1.1.4322.2032
DirectX 4.09.00.0902
old TNT2 card 1024x768 32 bit
when I uninstal xvid I get this:
System.Exception: Exception in AVIStreamGetFrameOpen!
at AVIFile.Open(String fileName)
it's because there is no colorspace converter, I could catch the exception but that wouldn't help much
it's different from yours:
System.Exception: Exception in AVIFileGetStream: -2147467259
at AVIFile.Open(String fileName)
-2147467259 is the error code for unspecified error
currently I don't have a idea what could cause this

I've uploaded a test build
http://www.planetdvb.net/dvx/DVX_4.0.4.2_test.exe
it might fix the bug about the crop and preview window that crash DVX on some systems (as so often none of mine). DVX and AVSEdit users complained that it is very slow, this new code uses kind of a hack using reflection to access private methods of the managed bitmap class, it works 3 times faster than the old implementation.

Finally after 3 month I've managed to make a new release. I've plans to build a new application based on DVX but with radical changes therefore I stop working on DVX other than fixing bugs. Of most things I'm not sure yet, it could look like:
new name
very different
many features removed
many other featured added
many featured reimplemented differently
modular
take a long time until I start seriously working on it and even much longer until it's finished.
some features will be moved to independent applications like the AviSynth editor will replaced by utilizing AVSEdit
that'll be the future, present is:
4.0.4.3 (2005-02-15)
Updated polish translation by Pablak.
Updated italian translation by uccellino.
Added support for latest DivX Fusion build.
Added "Go To Frame" feature in preview. It has a MRU (most recently used) feature and therefore can also be used to remember (on program level) positions.
New text editor control from SharpDevelop IDE.
Fixed crash in audio dialog that happened on streams DVX can't assign a language.
Decreased the min value of the resize slider to 320.
Automatic adjustment of the zoom factor in the preview for small resolutions to ensure all button are visible.
Fixed a very ugly process priority bug. I hope it works stable for *all* programs now. It works even for VirtualDub/Mod which does the encoding in a separate thread. The VirtualDub/Mod status window don't show the actual priority however because it cannot know DVX has changed the thread priority clandestinely.
Fixed negative crop values when cropping with the mouse.
Added option under Settings / General to specify which YV12 decoder the system uses. Works only with NT systems.
Added YV12 decoder to the requirements check showing warning if it's not properly installed. DVX works only with a YV12 decoder. It's recommend to use XviD as YV12 decoder since it's the fastest I've tested.
Improved preview and crop dialog related to layout and performance.
Fixed bugs that crashed the preview and crop dialog under certain circumstances.
Fixed a few flaws in the AviSynth script editor.
Removed common DivX dialog, it was broke after 5.2.1 and after Plasma/Fusion it's broke again.
Fixed VSRip trying to extract subtitles if the DVD hasn't subtitles.
Added Customizable size menu, improved context/main menu editor.
Reworked jobs dialog.
Reworked encoder options.
Added support for encoder profiles.
Added targeted comp. check value in advanced options.
Added support to reset encoders.
Added LameACM audio profile for VirtualDub to create MP3 CBR.
Removed requirement of the DVX help file is no longer required. The paths dialog is however shown where it can be downloaded if the help is invoked but not available.
Changed changelog from txt to htm.

It's been 8 month, I'm still working on my DVX successor StaxRip, in fact most things are finished, finally. It is incredible fun using all the awesome new features of the new .NET framework 2.0 beta 2 and the new Visual Basic .NET 2005 beta 2. Since Microsoft has scheduled to release the final versions of all this on 7. November I'd like to release a first public build shortly after that and I'm looking now for testers giving me early feedback. The more knowledge a tester has the better it is. In order to run it .NET 2.0 beta 2 is required. I cannot promise everything works, many bits are missing and many are not tested good enough.
If you are interested please pm me your email address, you'll get a invitation for a private google group.
