xvid playback slow

Hello folks, recently I encoded a movie using Gknot and Xvid 1.0.1 using settings recommended by the guide on doom9.org for 1 cd rip. I used h.263, 6 - Ultra high etc;

The movie is a full screen NTSC 29.97 interlaced one (used tomsmocomp)and it plays jerky (bsplayer Wmplayer etc). In Bsplayer I could notice the fps achieved was around 20, tried to play the movie only (no sound) and same thing.

However the same encoded video using Divx 5.11 plays fine.

Any ideas?

Postprocessing was always off, as of default options.

then why not use the DivX decoder? in principle without any post-processing all MPEG4-decoders should give the same image, no?

I have the same problem. It happens with any DVD, no matter if PAL or NTSC.

A very stupid question: Where is that "post-processing" trigger? What's the meaning?

About the filters I have: well, firstly I installed the Gknot codecpack 1.6 with default options, this one also install ffdshow (if that's the matter) and lastly I installed xvid 1.0.1.

i had the same problem and got a very good hint. turn off "Packed Bitstream" in your XviD encoder settings.

Packed Bitstream isn't to blame, that's absolutely BS.

It's your codec packs. Look into the FAQ and search for "Codec Packs".

ffdshow decodes xvid for me fine, and i use most advanced settings (GMC, qpel, multiple b-frames, etc) and at high resolutions. you may want to try that.

I've had ffdshow play my movies at half speed about 3 or 4 weeks ago (yes the latest, and no , no post processing )..I was getting between 15 and 20 fps and so a very jerky image, I never figured the reason, but uninstalling and reinstalling it seems to have fixed the issue for me.

I'm using koepi's latest xvid decoder, only, and it seems that encodes with xvid1 or higher are very slow (cpu is always maxed). I looked in the decoder settings and nothing was checked. Older xvid encodes don't seem to be much of a problem, but ones that have been reported as encoding xvid1 are. Can I assume that they were encoded with some extra post-prossessing? Is there any way to not use it? I'm on a Cel1.2 (oc'd to 1.6) and an athlon 1.4. The Cel has more trouble than the athlon.

Post processing is not encoded into your file. It is done during decoding.
Just make sure that you dont use settings that stress the CPU a bit more during decoding like QPEL.
The XviD decoder isnt the fastest - you could try ffdshow.

I just tried the ffdshow alpha from sourceforge and it plays much better on the cel1.2, although the picture looks grainier. It is smooth, though.

Go to ffdshow configuration -> miscellaneous -> IDCT -> set to [b]XviD[b]. Default in old ffdshow versions is "simple", or "normal" in very old versions. Both are not optimal for you - use XviD IDCT.

There is a libmpeg2(XviD). Is that what I should choose or should I still have the xvid codec installed with ffdshow? I uninstalled Xvid before installing ffdshow.

Yes, "libmpeg2(XviD)" is what you should use in ffdshow.

For playback only, you don't need to have XviD installed. ffdshow alone is sufficient.

But how can you coose to uninstall XviD ... after all, you're only going to watch stuff that you've encoded by yourself, aren't you?
