I have been using dvd decrypteor and dvd shrink. I can decrypt to the hard drive perfeclty with dvd decrypter, no matter what size the dvd is.
When I use dvd shrink it works perfect on dvd's that are under 3.99G.
If the dvd is over 3.99G, it errors out at 3.99G everytime. I'ver tried several different dvd's. I've been trying to fix this for weeks now.
No matter what I try(re-author,full back up, create Iso, etc..) it errors at 3.99G
I'm running win 98se(FAT32)
I have a 700mhz cpu, 80 G hard drive(with 70 G free) and 384 MB ram.
I don't know what else to try?
I'm thinking about going to WinXP. I have allready backed up all my files.
How do I convert my hard drive to NTFS with winXP?
Would you recomend the XP upgrade? Would that convert it to NTFS?
Or should I go with a clean install?
Thanks for any help

Hello, and welcome to the forum.
I don't use Shrink, so I don't know if there's a setting you need to keep the VOB sizes down to 1GB or not. If that's possible, then it should still work with a FAT32 disk partition.
With WinXP, all you need to convert from FAT32 to NTFS is to use the "convert" command. Open any command window (ye olde MS-DOS window) and type "convert /?" to see the command syntax.

hi phree,
just wanted to add that winxp might just be a little bit of a heavy load for your computer, although i'm sure it will run, so maybe you'll want to consider using win2k pro instead!
anyway, if you are doing a clean install of your windows, and i'd highly recommend you to, you'll have to format your hd anyway, at least your system partition. when doing this you can choose between NTFS and FAT32, so no need to convert afterwards ;)
cheers

Thanks for all the help.
Will dvd shrink work with fat32?
I thought that fat32 couldn't handle files more than 4G?
Which is why I wanted to try winxp.
If I do upgrade to winxp, I will do a clean install.
Every time I have backed-up a file 3.99G or less, dvd shrink has worked flawlessly! It has never failed!
When I try to back-up a file larger than 3.99G, dvd shrink has read errors, every single time. I have yet to be sucessful backing-up a file larger than 3.99G
I must be missing something, but don't know what it is yet?

We discussed this same problem recently in this thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=77472), you may find it helpful. Formatting to NTFS will fix your 4GB problem.
I loaded XP on my Dad's PC last year and it's only an 850MHz Athlon. It seems to handle Shrink just fine, but we also upgraded the memory to 384MB's immediately upon installation.

i have winme and i uses dvd shrink, no problem here; but all my *.vob are under 1gb [(Split VOB files into 1GB chunks) recommended]
i also backup ps2 games, no problem there too (a thread for later)

How doI split the VOB files into 1GB chunks?
Why would XP be a heavy load for my computer? Is it because of the 700mhz cpu or the 384MB ram? I could add more ram.

It's mainly the 700MHz. I always recommend at least 512MB of RAM to run XP. Though you could get away with this with your setup (I've done that exact setup before without problems), it will run quite slow. Not crawling slow, but you will notice a big difference.

I could upgrade the ram to 512.
Would win2k be better for my set up than winxp?

It depends. If you have any DOS based games that want to keep playing, then XP is definitely the way to go. If not, 2K will run a little better on your system, as it's not as resource intensive.
Basically, if you want bells and whistles and compatibility with just about everything, and don't mind a little slowness, then XP is what you are after.
2000 is a very stable, clean, and professional operating system. You most likely won't run into any compatibility issues with the exception of some older games. It doesn't have all of the features of XP, but then again, it's still quite an upgrade to what you currently have.

i'd already give you the answer; but it seem i'd should have been a little bit clearer:
DVD Shrink -> Edit -> Perferences... -> Output Files: you should be able to figure it out
i'd install xp on my old celeron 500 w/ 128mb, didn't notice any big differences, 2 days & 3 re-installation of xp later, and i went back to winme; i just perfer it more over xp

I just got my MSDN account so I have a few choices on which operating system to use. Was thinking about giving it a try and I think I will after reading this thread.
I noticed microsoft has an OS called Windows Server 2003 that looked pretty neat. Heheh, might as well give them all a try considering they're all free! :)

Did u split up ur hdd?
I do recommend splitting up the hdd, 1 partition for the OS, and the rest for whatever u r using the pc for. If u r going to install winXP u only need to convert the patition where u want the output files to NTFS. I left my OS-partition fat32, 'cause NTFS gave me some probs.
Installing XP on a 700mhz pc shouldn't have that great an effect on performance, my dad has a 600mhz AMD, with 384 RAM, and it runs even faster than his win 98 version....

I have been working on installing XP now for 2 days. I had to re-install all my programs and drivers.
Only problem I had was I couldn't find the driver for my sound card. I took it out but there wasn't any info on it. I also tried driverguide.com. In the end I had to by a new sound card.
So far I'm happy with XP. I really didn't notice much difference in performance. I'm still going to upgrade the RAM later this week.
Win2k was about a $100 more in price, which is why I choose XP.
I have been very busy working on XP, so I have only tried to back-up one file that was bigger than 3.99GB. Dvdshrink worked fine. It was the first time that I was able to back-up a file larger than 3.99GB
I would like to thank everybody for there input and opion. You were all very insightful and helpful. Thanks to this forum(and the users on it) I can now do larger files.
