Jaggies on encoding dvd

encoding dvd to divx 5, but the result is a jaggy image, how to make it smooth just like the original ?

I'm using xmpeg with divx codec 5.05, no matter what the resolution i chosed it still jaggy.

Are you seing interlacing artifacts? The can be there if the content was originally shot with a video camera, or if it was filmed at 24fps and then transferred to NTSC video (Telecined).

The dvd is PAL system, it's 720/576 and i'd like to convert it to a smaller divx resolution. Is that because of forcing it to a smaller res then it become jaggy. But it wasn't that bad like on your link. I'll show you the image later.

Do i have to keep the aspect ratio to convert to a smaller res ?

All PAL DVDs will be 720x576. That would be 1.25:1 if their pixels were square like most .avi files. But their pixels are not square. Instead, the disc will either have a Display Aspect Ratio of 4:3 or 16:9. When you render into DivX, you are converting to square pixels.

You've not provided enough information (such as an image) for me to be able to help you further. I've not used Xmpeg, so I can't give any procedural advice, either. If Xmpeg produces a log file, you might consider pasting it here.

This time i have Looney Tunes dvd, 720x480, 16:9, Progressive, NTSC Film (Frame Rate)i convert it to DivX with resolution of 352x240, Billinear, 4:3 aspect ratio, with DivX Codec 5.05.

(i would like to put image from my hdd here, but what is the code :confused: )

The point is that i want lower resolution with sharp motion picture using DivX codec so it fit into a cd. At least at vcd resolution, 352x240 but when full screen it would still have sharp image.

By the way, what is the program yu've been using, if its freeware i would like to use it too.

I use Gordian Knot. I recommend you try Auto Gordian Knot, as it is much easier to use, and comes with a very nice tutorial.

I don't quite understand whether or not you used Force Film. Is your final framerate 23.976fps, as it should be? If it's 29.97fps, then you screwed up. Also, 352x240 gives you an AR of 1.47:1, which is off. If you're going to do them for a low resolution like that, then 352x256 will give you the correct AR.

And are we talking about the 4 DVD Looney Tunes Box Set? If so, then they're 4:3, and not 16:9. If you got 16:9 from GKnot, that's just the default. Get the DAR from DVD2AVI, and then change it in GKnot if necessary.

Your resolution, especially combined with Bilinear resizing, will not give you a "sharp motion picture". But if you try and fit all 14 cartoons from each DVD onto 1 CD, then you may not have any choice. I've done all 4 DVDs in the set. I split them over 2 CDs at 528x384 and also put the main documentary included with each DVD on there.

Yeah, try AutoGK.
