View Full Version : Aspect ratio problem

MacPhisto
19th June 2004, 17:22
I known that the dvd2svcd last version has a problem with anamorphic 16:9 add borders. I trying to backup the Godfather II who is widescreen to dvd and mantain the DAR. When i choose in D2S the aspect ratio 16:9 addborders the preview image is vertical streched who is a well know problem. I did a search in this forum and i tryed to solve this problem with autofitcd plugin but without no results. I follow the steps to put it work (autodetectborders.... Source= anamorphic pal dvd, destination = anamorhic pal dvd) but the final output is a 4:3 full streched vertical like the preview.
I read somewhere in thread do that manually and i also tryed to apply in the script the following in the frameserver tab (lanczoresize)

LasczoResize(720,440)
AddBorders(0,68,0,68)

who offcourse addborders to final output but final DAR is still 4:3 when i want a anamorphic output.

What can i do to solve this and reach the final anamorphic pal dvd output.

Thanks in advance

MacPhisto

I'm not sure I really understand your problem.
Firstly, the resizing problems with the current build AFAIK only affect AVI sources, not DVD sources.

I am thinking you are choosing the option "16:9 (borders added, encoded as 4:3)" in the Conversion tab. This will give 4:3 output with black bars top and bottom. If you want anamorphic output, go into the Misc tab and set your DVD2SVCD level to Advanced. Now a third option appears in the Conversion tab for anamorphic output.

If you choose this third option, from anamorphic DVD input to anamorphic DVD output, no resizing needs to (nor should) take place.
Please note that if you are making (S)VCD, choosing Anamorphic generally results in a disc most players won't play - it is only suitable for DVD output.

Also please note that unless you use a resizing plugin, the display in the preview window takes no account of output aspect ratio so this will look stretched anyway.

Hope this helps

My purpose is to do an anamorphic pal dvd output and the imput is an anamorphic pal dvd. I´m not choosing "16:9 (borders added, encoded as 4:3)" that´s for sure.
What i think is really strange is that i choose "anamorphic (no borders, encoded as 16:9)" and the final output is a 4:3 with no borders in WinDVD and my standalone player.
If the imput dvd is anamorphic (and i positve that he is) and i choose "anamorphic (no borders, encoded as 16:9)" i think the final final output must be a 16:9 anamorphic, right?

What can i do to fix this?

BicubicResize(352,288,0.0,0.6)

From your avisynth script.

The DVD Specifications only allow for anamorphic 16:9 at full D1 resolution. Although VCD framesize (352x288) is supported, it is only supported for 4:3 output.

Adjust the "Resize to" box in the frameserver tab to the correct resolution and try again.

EDIT- Unless of course you changed to this setting just for the chapter test, for faster encoding...

Note that i already did a encode of the entire movie with 4 passes vbr and DDogg interlaced template and burn it to dvd with this problem. Then i make this experience with chapters to see if can solve this. This problem happens not only with this but all 16:9 anamorphic movies that i´be been trying to encode.

MacPhisto
19th June 2004, 19:26
I Tryed again now with the LanczosResize DVD(720x480/576), and the output file is still 4:3 format. This is not the first time that it happens, it´s the same with all anamorphic dvds that i tryed to backup.

Nick can you tell me anything about that?

OK you've got me.
I can't see anything at all wrong with that log :(
However, I just did a test chapter of a 16:9 PAL DVD I had and it came out perfect. I tried to get the settings as close as I could to yours but I can't reproduce the problem.

Could you post your mplex_log and dvdauthor_log files please?

I can see that the aspect ratio is 4:3, i don´t know why. Very strange. I´m without any direction!!
It´s possible that is a bug of the new D2S?

Nick

Well. The resizing has been done correctly but it appears during video encoding the anamothic flag has not been set in the mpeg stream.

What version of CCE are you using?
Have you upgraded to a newer version recently?

It doesn't seem to be dvd2svcd as with as close as I can get to your settings, my test chapter encodes fine :confused:. Also, this version has been around for 5 weeks or so - I can;t imagine you'd be the first to notice such a glaring bug!

I'm baffled.
Sorry

Nick

PS, as an interim solution, you could use DVDPatcher to set the 16:9 flag in the authored vobs then recover from image creation (if you really need an ISO image)

Note, be sure to set the other parameters (resolution, bitrate, framerate) to the correct values and set DVDPatcher to patch the entire file. You will need to repeat this process for each authored vob. A royal PITA but better than nothing.

The version of CCE that i´m using is 2.67.00.27

I will try to encode same chapter with another version of CCE like CCE 2.50 and see what it gives.

In relation to the DVDpatcher is there any lost of quality in this process, since the vobs files are encoded in 4:3?

I´ve already tried the DVDpacther and it works fine but when i open in my dvd player (open dvd folder in harddisk), the movie is 4:3, but if i open the vob file that i patched in same dvdplayer i can see that is correct 16:9. Is it because the ifo files contain 4:3 information, if so isn´t better to patch the mpeg muxed file and than authoring the dvd?

MacPhisto
19th June 2004, 22:33
I´ve tryed to encode the same chapter, but now with different version of cce (CCE 2.50). The only thing i can say is that the problem persist. The final output is still 4:3.
I can´t figure out the problem, but what can i do!

Thanks Nick for your help, and if anybody remember something to solve this i will be aprecciate.

Thanks

Nick

You are right. You have to run DVDPatcher on the muxed file, then crash recover from DVD-Authoring.

You cannot possibly lose quality from doing the DVDPAtcher thing. Either way the encoded video is 720x576, the AR flag only sets how the information will be handled for your TV.

I don't think your CCE version is a problem either. But I have no other thoughts.

Sorry :(

Unfortunately I have no idea about your problem @MacPhisto......, but it might be easier to use IfoEdit to fix your finished 4:3 DVD Titleset than DVDPatcher and crash recovering as Nick suggests.

With IfoEdit all you have to do is load your .ifo's, highlight VIDEO_TS.ifo in the top window, doubleclick on the VTS_1 video MPEG stream in the bottom window and change the tickboxes to 16:9 and "automatic letterboxed" click "ok", then highlight VTS_01_0.ifo in the top window, doubleclick on the title set(movie) MPEG stream in the bottom window and change the tickboxes to 16:9 and "automatic letterboxed" click "ok". Save both your .ifo's and you're done.

Probably worth shutting down ifoedit, restarting it, loading up your .ifo's again and using the "get VTS sectors" button to make sure everything's pointing in the right direction.

....A long time ago I used to use Spruceup to author DVD's (it only produced 4:3 whatever source you put in), this is how I did 16:9.....

I get exactly the same problem when converting an avi to svcd. Image is vertically stretched.

Using CCE 2.5. No problems if I use previous DVD2SVCD version.

Could you please paste here the content of the file CCE_Project_file_MOVIE.ecl? It is in the project dir.

On Coversion tab you selected 16:9 encoded as 4:3? If not, try it. If yes post log in a new thread.

Nick

@Fugdefino

This is probably a different issue.
There is a known bug in the latest build with resizing from avi sources.

Take a look at this thread (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=78024&highlight=avi+resizing)

Set the Frameserver tab to edit the avissynth script as part of video encoding then use jsoto's splendid AVI resize calculator (linked from the other thread).

Or of course, use a previous build for your AVI's.

HTH
Nick

PS I found that thread with a forum search for "avi resizing". The search button is there to be used! Don't forget it's there - it can be your best friend. :)

This is weird

The ecl contains "Aspect Ratio=2"
This should be "Aspect Ratio=3"

I've really never seen this problem with previous or current builds.
Nor can I reproduce the problem.

I can't see it helping but could you deinstall D2S and CCE, then do a clean install of both? I really can't imagine such a glaring bug has been missed by everyone else - so it does seem peculiar to your setup.

Other than that I really am foxed.

SelectedAspectRatio=2

I think these 2 should be the same. For me it is. Try to change viAspectRatio to 2. Of course keep a copy of the original. Than restart the project, from video encoding.

For me:
d2s file:
viAspectRatio=2
SelectedAspectRatio=2
ecl file:
aspect ratio=3

This results WS. 2 and 3 can mean different things to different programs.

@Nick
viAspectRatio is detected from the source?

Manngo i´ve finnished what you tell me to do but without any results. I change viAspectRatio to 2 and let SelectedAspectRatio=2, but the final encoding video is still 4:3, i also tried to change viAspectRatio to 3 and SelectedAspectRatio=3 but the final output is the same.
I take a look to the ecl file and the aspect_ratio=2 in booth situations, wich let me think that whatever i do the ecl file is allways wrong.
Is there any possibility to force the aspect ratio in the ecl file to be equal to 3?

If the imput dvd is anamorphic (and i positve that he is) and i choose "anamorphic (no borders, encoded as 16:9)" i think the final final output must be a 16:9 anamorphic, right?

What can i do to fix this?

MacPhisto,thanks(obrigado)for the pictures posted.:) yes,...big AR error!
see my dvd source as example in ifoedit: video: Mpeg2 720x480 (NTSC) (NTSC 525/60) (16:9) (pan & scan letterboxed)... and when i load the ifo in D2s,is (auto)choosed "16:9 (borders added, encoded as 4:3)" that give me the right AR like the source but if i change to "anamorphic (no borders, encoded as 16:9)" or " 4:3 (no borders,encoded as 4:3)" give me wrong AR like 4:3 full streched vertical !
i think that the right choose is "16:9 (borders added, encoded as 4:3)" -->or don't use any resize in the script. choose "edit as part of video encoding",load the script in vdub,see the AR,change what need,click save(don't click ok,test it again in vdub) and when it's right,click ok in avisynth script...D2s will encode using the AR like you saw in vdub. ;)

viAspectRatio is detected from the source?

Honest answer is I don't know. It isn't a variable I've ever tried messing with.

@MacPhisto
Is there any possibility to force the aspect ratio in the ecl file to be equal to 3?

With extreme difficulty! As I understand it, what D2S does is open CCE, add the avs script in the file window and then save the result as an ecl file. It then edits this saved ecl to correct the settings for bitrate, AR, number of passes etc. It then gets CCE to open the edited ecl file and start encoding.

You would have to interrupt the process manually just as the edited ecl file was being loaded back up. Then edit the ecl in Notepad and then open it manually in CCE.

But I still can't pinpoint why this is happening.

jsoto
21st June 2004, 23:58
I'm also trying to reproduce this problem, but with no success. :confused:

Just to clarify some ideas, which seems a little bit confused in this thread:
IFO files have stored video and audio attributes. But these attributes (DAR is an example, it could be 4:3 , 16:9 or other illegal values) are also stored in video MPEG headers, that means, inside the VOBs.
Using IFOEdit you can easily modify the attributes on IFOs, but not inside the VOBs; for this job you have to use DVDPatcher. BOTH actions have to be done to keep coherent the video attributes inside the VOB and the ones stored in the IFOs.

I've found some DVDs (not really many, only a couple) with an attribute error, that means, the description stored in the IFO did not match with the actual attribute of the video track.

So, I've tried to confuse D2S creating "a bad DVD", with a mismatch in DAR attribute (between IFO and VOB). Also no success. BTW, D2S seems to detect the right DAR inside the VOB, not the one stored in the IFO and automatically selects the right DAR conversion (although you can change it in the combo)

jsoto

Ah!. IFOs have the audio/video attributes stored twice. One in the IFO of the VTS and a "backup copy" in the VIDEO_TS.IFO. AFAIK, the values stored in VIDEO_TS.IFO are not used by settops, but you never know...

MacPhisto
22nd June 2004, 02:20
I can correct the problem if i use DVDpatcher in muxed.mpg file and then restart the D2S in the DVD authoring. Doing this the final output is a anamorphic 16:9 movie like the original, but doing this all the time that i have a movie to backup i will waste a lot of time (patient).

@jorel

Like you said, when i load the ifo file in D2S, the (auto)choose select "anamorphic (no borders, encoded as 16:9)", who i think is the right aspect ratio of the movie. I didn´t crop or resize de movie output, is still 720x576 pal, i can see it in my dvd player informations.

@Manngo

If you want to give a try, i haven´t any problems with that.
Offcourse if your intentions are good :)

22nd June 2004, 04:31
if you don't crop or resize,it can show wrong AR in 4:3 tvs,or better,4:3 full streched vertical but maybe perfect for hdtvs and/or wide screens(i think).
can you load the vts_xx_x.ifo of the (main)movie in ifoedit and post the "title set(movie)attributes" of this video here? maybe it can help!

MacPhisto

Video attributes of the output file in Ifoedit:

Video mpeg 2, 720x576 (Pal) (Pal 625/50) 4:3 (not specified perm.display)

jorel
22nd June 2004, 23:51
sometimes i have some dvds that the inicial presentation(paramont as sample)is 16:9 but few seconds later the movie is 4:3 and "mess' the choice of D2S AR. if "Video mpeg 2, 720x576 (Pal) (Pal 625/50) 16:9 (letterboxed)" are "menu attributes" and "Video mpeg 2, 720x576 (Pal) (Pal 625/50) 4:3 (not specified perm.display)" are "title set (movie) attributes" in ifoedit means that your movie is "4:3 (no borders,encoded as 4:3)" but can load in D2S as "16:9 (borders added,encoded as 4:3)...your dvd source don't have seamless "problems" like that with the presentation with different AR within the main movie?
if yes, encode without resizes in the D2S script or edit your dvd removing the first scenes with differents ARs(dvdshrink using "no compression" can do it easy)! but maybe another member have better recomendations!:)

@MacPhisto, at the risk of me asking (yet another) stupid question, do you have "keep interlaced" selected?

This will always force 4:3 outputs.

Nick
23rd June 2004, 09:25
ZigzagScanningOrder=No
UpperFieldFirst=No
ProgressiveFrames=No

From MacPhisto's avisynth script, so this could well be a yes!

Is there a good reason why "keep interlaced" should force 4:3?
I can see why resizing could cause problems (ie 16:9 borders added, encode as 4:3) but I can't for the life of me see why the AR flag should affect anything.

But then in the UK, interlaced DVD's are as rare as hell so I've yet to back one up. If if there's a good reason for this I bow to the experience of others. But if someone could fill me in I'd like to know just out of interest.

Cheers
Nick

MacPhisto

Yes, i have "keep interlaced" checked and you are right ralphthedog.
This is why this is happening.

I did 2 another encodings to see what happens. One is a non interlaced source wich i choose "no deinterlacing and the other is the same chapter of the Godfather II that i encoded before and now i choose deinterlace "Telecine Pal".

Conclusions
The Aspect ratio problem no longer exists. In both situations i choose "anamorphic (no borders, encoded as 16:9) and the output files is an anamorphic 16:9.

The reasons that i choose "keep interlaced" is because most of the movies that i want to backup are interlaced and since i only want to watch them on a widescreen tv i haven´t see any reason to deinterlace and i never read on this forum or any guide that this could happen if i choose "Keep interlacing".

Now this maybe be stupid question but what you think is the best in terms of final quality. Since most of movies that i backup are interlaced and i can´t choose "keep interlaced" and "anamorphic (no borders, encoded as 16:9)" to obtain a anamorphic movie. If is best to deinterlace with "Telecine Pal" or choose "keep interlaced" and when the process is done pacth the output files with dvd patcher to force the movie to be an anamorphic movie?

bobwillis

Hi MacPhisto,

Are you sure most of your movies are interlaced? I have only ever seen one movie that was true interlaced ('Casino' UK Region 2 PAL). If you don't see any interlaced combing artifacts in the DVD2DVD preview window, or if you load a vob into DVD2AVI and can't see any combing, then feel free to encode it as progressive.

Regards,
Bob

MacPhisto

@ bobwillis

In this particularity case i now that the source is interlaced. I used Virtualdubmod to see it (there is horizontal lines who let thought that it was interlaced), but about the rest of movies probably they aren´t true interlaced. You are right. This movie that i have (godfather II) is a check disk of a publisher, so i think this is not the standard disk who is for sale.

I said that most movies are interlaced because i made a mistake of using the intervideo windvd informations to see that (big, big mistake). Fortunately i didn´t yet encode them.

Regards
and i´m sorry for any incovenience

bobwillis
23rd June 2004, 23:19
Hi MacPhisto,

Be careful with Virtualdubmod, because NTSC sources will show combing effects due to the telecine process. As your source is PAL, it probably is interlaced, check if you can see combing in frames with movement with the DVD2SVCD preview window.

As for which is the best way to go, I would use keep interlaced, encode with an interlaced template, and correct the aspect ratio with ifoedit. I would prefer this method because it is likely (IMHO) to give better results than processing with 'telecide PAL'.

From decombhelp.html: "Telecide(): Recovers progressive frames (by finding and aligning matching fields) but does not remove resulting duplicates and does not change the frame rate or frame count. Do not use Telecide on streams that do not contain telecined progressive frames, such as pure interlaced video. Note that a stream of PAL progressive frames that are shifted by one field will exhibit combing and can be considered a telecined stream for purposes of recovery; Telecide will easily handle this situation.

By default, Telecide runs postprocessing on the recovered frames. This postprocessing checks each frame to see if it is combed (some combed frames may come through the field-matching process [see below]), and if a frame is combed, it is deinterlaced, otherwise it is not touched. The deinterlacing algorithm is a space-adaptive one, that is, only the portions of a frame that are combed are deinterlaced. This means that full detail is retained in static picture areas. The algorithm for distinguishing between combed and progressive frames is effective but not perfect".

Bob again: As you can see, telecide() performs quite extensive processing, and as you know that your source is pure interlaced, you are probably better keeping it that way and encoding it in the appropriate manner. Thanks for pointing out the bug with the aspect ratio.

Regards,
Bob

I think the "keep interlaced" option was meant for interlaced sources originating from, or shot for TV (hence the 4:3 only thing).

bobwillis has the whole interlaced thing nailed down I reckon. Previewing in DVD2AVI is the best way to tell if something is interlaced or progressive, you can see combing in the DVD2SVCD preview window if something is truly interlaced too.

One thing to be aware of, in my (PAL) experience anyway, is that many DVD's, especially movies, are flagged interlaced but not true interlaced. So If it's not combing I just use an interlaced CCE template, "no deinterlacing" and don't have any problems,(probably worth trying this as another option if you do have 16:9 true interlaced too).
