Converting AVIs into DVD Compliant MPEG Streams

I have a bunch of random home movies, stored in AVI format on my computer. Is there any way to convert these into MPEGs for burning to DVD (preferably a method that does not require money)? Sorry, if the answer is right under my nose, because I didn't see it.

Go to the Guides (http://www.doom9.org/guides.htm) page, then click on "Format Conversions". Check out the two AVI2DVD options listed there, you'll have plenty to keep you busy for awhile!

Thanks. I can't believe I missed that guide. Now, do you have any suggestions for things to do while my computer is encoding video?
