Decrypting VOBs that were just copied to an HDD

I have a bunch of VOBs from a DVD that I just directly copied to my HDD ages ago (ie. they're still encrypted). I have the VIDEO_TS and AUDIO_TS directories, and it all seems to play well enough in Windows. Unfortunately I now tend to use Linux for most things so it would be nice to be able to play the movie under Linux - this currently doesn't work as the files are encrypted - I may as well compress it to XviD while I'm at it.

So my question is; how can I decrypt the files so I can watch/manipulate them in Linux? I can only find guides to decrypting the files direct from the DVD which seems to be buggered due to a rather deep scratch.

If files are encrypted than it is imposible to play them in WS or in Linux.
You wrote that you played them in Windows so may be only some streams are encrypted for example the second audio streams.

you may also use 'smartripper' (dl from Doom9).
Unlike dvd decrypter, it has a winIO mode which can re-rip the files to anywhere you like, this time enabling DeCSS...

If they were encrypted you wouldn't have been able to "directly" copy them to your hdd. The copy protection is on the disc not the vobs.

Anyway, just use DVDShrink. If it doesn't work you'll have to rip again.

Actually you can just copy protected vobs off a disc. The only thing that stops you doing it is the initial authentication process that must be performed. Playing the disc in windvd would do the authentication stuff and allow you to copy them in explorer.

The CSS would remain intact though and unless a program support brute forcing of the decryption key, it wouldnt be able to play them.

I dont think dvdshrink does do brute force, I think it needs the original dvd for protected vobs, or unprotected vobs if reading direct from the hdd.

To get DVD Decrypter working, you can use ImgTool to make an ISO from the vobs. Mount that in DEAMON Tools and then rip from the DT virtual drive.

As you say; the vobs can be taken off the DVD while still being encrypted, as that's what I'm left with (mplayer wasn't at all impressed with playing them!)

I had a go with smartripper but it seemed to just output the encrypted vobs again, so I'll have a go with DVD Decrypter sometime soon, thanks a lot for the pointers everyone!

I used to copy files to disk before decrypting (don't ask why), I was making SVCDs then and DVD2SVCD's internal routines worked fine.

Try vstrip with GUI, from memory that also works just fine.
