Streaming video in LAN - where to start?

Who can suggest good information source for streaming video?

Something about LAV television: how is it possible to connect camera to PC, encode video in realtime and broadcast to LAN community. Software (better free), hardware solutions, etc...

There are several open-source streaming solutions.
Another is Darwin Streaming Server
