For anyone interested, Pegasus Imaging has released Version 3 of their PICVideo M-JPEG Codec.

This codec costs quite a bit.

Why not using th free FFDshow VfW interface and use the built-in MJPEG?

It has great quality and isn't slow.

I didn't realize FFDshow VfW interface supported MJPEG. Is it selectable for use with capture programs such as Virtual VCR? I have been using PICVideo2 for a couple of years for capturing with good results. I'll check out FFDshow VfW interface. Thanks for the info.

For capturing I moved to ffdshow (selectable in virtual vcr via dshow and vfw) huffyuv encoding (will switch there again once my 160GB harddisk returns from the shop...).
If you have "limited" space only and a fast machine (2GHz class computer, at least 133MHz FSB [i.e. athlon 2k+]) I use wavelet 9/7 from Eduardo at http://sf.net/projects/btwincap/ . It's experimental, but after finetuning and recompiling it for my preferences (it defaults to use deltaframes which look bad, iframe only [set keyframe every [1] frames] encodes look very good though) it's way better than picvideo mjpeg as it doesn't produce block-artefacts which get amplified when re-encoding to mpeg.

And what mjpeg codec can you recommend for very fast decoding?
I have DC10+ (hardware mjpeg) and I am tring to do something like this: hardware mjpeg -> mjpeg decoder -> XviD on capture to save space for one-time-view-stuff.

I started using the PICVideo MJPEG codec back when I had smaller disk drives and a slower system. My current fastest video processing box has a 3GHz P4 with a pair of 160G hard drives. As I made the hardware upgrades, I cranked up the encoder quality settings. It looks like its time to re-evaluate codecs. :)
