View Full Version : Problems with ReBuilder

I am a complete newb, and just had a few questions regarding ReBuilder. I installed RB .52, CCE 2.67.00.10 Trial, current version of ECL, and AVISynth 2.5. I configured everything following the guidelines set forth by afterdawn.com and elsewhere in this forum. I am trying to backup the movie Runaway Jury.

First question, under CCE mode, I selected CCE SP 2.66+, because it would not encode at all when I had CCE Basic 2.67+. Is this correct?

I also kept all CCE advanced options on default (only 2 passes). I believe I read somewhere that CCE trial is limited to only 2 passes, but I can't remember for sure. Is this the case?

Here's a summary of what I have done so far. I apologize if post is long-winded, just want to be as accurate as possible.

I ripped the movie to my hard drive using the latest version of DVD Decryptor. I then stripped out all of the trailers, warnings, logos, and credits using DVDReMake. I then test everything using windvd and it all looks and sounds good.

Start Rebuilder using all the defaults. I uncheck all audio tracks except Dolby Digital and all subtitles. At this point, the movie is just over 5GB. It goes through preperation in about 7 minutes, then only encodes for about 72 minutes. From what I've read, this seems way too fast (running a P4 3.1 GHz, 1 GB RAM, 800MHz FSB, HP, blah blah). Rebuild goes fine.

I burn the movie using NERO in DVD Movie mode. Disc starts up fine in my Sony DVP-CX985V. However, the sound continues to drop out fairly randomly throughout the movie. (I've already posted this in the appropriate forum, so I won't go on about this). It seems that the picture is just a bit grainy (the actual disc doesn't seem crystal clear, but I do notice a bit of a difference). Would the quality be increased (I know, quality is subjective, and varies with each circumstance, however, there isn't THAT much compression to be done here) if I increase the number of passes (as I mentioned before, only 2)?

Is it possible that it's the media? I burned it at 4x on a TDK RW (I know, not the best media out there). Though I don't think that this is the problem, as I've used it before with DVD Shrink without any problems.

Last question is this: Is there a quality difference between using Rebuilder with CCE or using the Big3 with CCE? I would assume not, since all the transcoding is done by the same program, but if there is a difference, I want to be sure to get the best quality possible.

Thanks for reading, sorry it's so long.

hi,
first to your media question, yes it is possible that the media causes this error... anyway, to check if the actual encoding is fine, try using image tool classic to create an iso file from your files and run this with deamon tools to check the video/audio!
furthermore, you mentioned that you used an RW media! please keep in mind that some of these might go bad fairly quickly, i've heard about people only being able to fully write to it less than 10 times! so perhaps another RW would be a solution too.
last point: try reducing the burning speed from 4x to 2x or even 1x... lower speed, less errors :)

the encoding time of 72 minutes is really surprisingly low, especially for a movie of 127 minutes length... anyway, after all your computer is quite decent (from what i can say at least).

this depends very much on the settings used in the Big3. You must know that the Big3 includes a lot of configurability and if you know what you are doing, along with the possibility too remove some or all extras you should be able to achieve better quality than with DVD-RB. For less experienced users, DVD-RB guarantees a high standard of quality without the need for a large amount of knownledge!

oh and i almost overlooked that part, yes increasing the number of passes generally improves the quality, although rather insignificantly on slight compressions! Anyway, the grain would probably be easier to fight by editing the avisynth script...

Thank you for the reply.

Yes, I remember RW media being a problem when I was trying to burn SVCD's way back when. Could only burn to it once, after my dvd player wouldn't read it anymore...damn finnicky things. Anyhow, I had already taken that into account and was burning to a new disc each time. I also didn't think that it was the media, as it worked fine at 4x with DVD Shrink (by the way, I had remembered incorrectly, the media is Fujifilm RW, not TDK, if that makes a difference). Last night, even before reading your post, tried to burn another copy at the slowest speed that Nero would let me for that media, 2.4x, and still had the audio drops in the same places (which seems to be when scenes change). I've now tried it in both of my DVD players (Sony and Pioneer multi-region). I loaded the encoded video into WinDVD and it played fine. I put either of these two burned discs into my computer, and they play fine. I know from reading here that software DVD players are a lot more forgiving though...at least I know that the encoding and multiplexing seems to be fine.

Now, all that being said, I know that altering original content with DVDReMake isn't really supported with Rebuilder. So, last night, I made a complete backup of this movie using rebuilder with all original content. This time, it worked fine in both DVD players. So my problem obviously lies with DVDReMake. So this raises a couple of new questions.

1) Is it possible that the DVDReMake and Rebuilder combination just doens't work with this movie, or will I likely run into this with most movies?

2) Are there any other programs that you could recommend that I could use to strip out the extras, trailers, warnings, credits, and production logos that will still work with ReBuilder?

Again, sorry for being so long-winded.

Its more like it that u will face this problem with the majority of the movies that u will try to remake before rebuilding.

I also think that we wont ever get rid of this, as both programms rely on the assumption that they r dealing with a 100% compliant structure that apparently is not the case.

As for your second question, u could try ifoedit or even dvdshrink.
