Firefox v0.9 Final is out

Let's discuss.

So far it's running very well except I had to delete my v0.8 profile which means the lengthy setup process to get it usable. I've been setting it up for the last half-hour. As you can imagine support pages are bogged down like crazy. The v0.8 official release wasn't stable on my system so I've tested half a dozen builds in the last couple of months and gotten very adept at setting it up.

There was a bit of a dust up over the default theme change (due to legal issues with the artwork), but I don't mind the new theme. A little flat, but not ugly. I can live with it.

Speed seems improved over the last build I was using(05.06.2004), but it had a known bug for slow image rendering. I kept using it because of the issue that came up with AdBlocker in later versions, and I got the Spellcheck ext to work, which was hit-n-miss with different builds (still have to do that for this release). So I didn't want to risk messing up my setup with v0.9 so close.

I just deleted the old firefox directory and copied in the new files. Works like charme so far. The new GUI layout is OK IMO, I like the new "loading" animation.

No problems until now (even without deleting my profile).

It totally spazed when trying to load my old profile. I would launch it, select my profile and then the profile selector would close and nothing would launch. My pointer would display the small hourglass next to it (work in background) and nothing. I checked taskman and firefox.exe was running, but I couldn't even endtask on it. So I restarted my computer and just before the shutdown page displayed I would get a window saying something like "Firefox dll could not initiate because system is shuting down".

Though I'm long time Mozilla user I still installed it. During installation I picked Import Bookmarks / etc. from Mozilla. It loads up quickly - and had all my bookmarks as in Mozilla in the Personal Toolbar . The most amazing thing -> its either me or it is really very fast. Just made sure cache is cleared etc. but still very nice performance. Well the first thing I missed is - the gestures extension. So I installed it and it works just like in Mozilla. The only bug I encoutered so far is it doesnt expand folders in the bookmark when I rightclick and hit 'expand'.

Well anyone who is still using IE and doesnt like the 'big Mozilla' (with all its extra applications and own way) - now is the best time to switch :)
Firefox behaves (UI etc.) more like IE while taking the best from Mozilla.

Using Fx 0.8 for about a month now being really satisfied with it's performance i wait for the german translation. The link to it is already there, only the file itself is still missing :(

Installed it on both my linux and windows partitions, and picked up my 0.8 settings just fine. Pretty smooth so far, the new theme isn't too shabby, and the linux installer was impressive. I had tried the linux installer on a nightly release a while back and had many problems, but it seems to have installed flawlessly this time.

Unfortunately, Firefox 0.9 is a perfect example of how do NOT release software.

There are numerous known bugs in it, unfortunately. Most are not horrible, but they can give a bad impression. Why releasing it, then? No idea. They just picked any code they had at that time and released...

Firefox has been my browser of choice, and I was updating with nightly instabuilds every week or so - so I know the bugs and deal with them fine. Still, this milestone is much less stable than 0.8...

Just to be clear: I'm only writing this because I fear that some people will say "I downloaded it and it crashes, I'm going back to IE" - don't do that ;) this is the first time they've done so, FF is a wonderful piece of software :D

As for Qute theme, its creator refused to make it open. Firefox is an open software and I have to agree that all its components, including default theme, should be open. You can download and install it anyway, if you like it (but I use pinball, it's the greatest theme).

Install it and have fun ;) And remember, new critical holes (http://secunia.com/advisories/11793/) have been discovered in IE recently, and you can't patch them. And the are being used to install ad popup thingies.

Not to mention that IE is the poorest, most featureless browser of all modern browsers...
