Divx and DVD-r ... bit by bit

hey guys,
i'm trying to make a decision on dvd backup procedure.

backing up dvd's to dvd-r has proved to be problematic for me so far.

i'm curious about making divx movies. I love mpeg4.

---any opinions on which would look better: a dvd9 disk compressed to fit on dvd5 or a dvd9 disk encoded with divx and saved on a dvd5?

---do you get menu's when using divx encoding?

little side question -> when i've watched dvd's on my computer before there's this nasty zigzag line that wipes across the screen in between some shots. anybody ever get that? know what it is?

IMHO, DVD9 -> XviD -> DVD5... :D

Zigzag lines are on interlaced content, PC players such as PowerDVD automatically deinterlace them.

The best quality would be DVD9 -> XviD -> DVD5, of course you must do an anamorphic encode or it wont look that good.

i've been looking up IMHO trying to figure out what it means but i can't.
what does it mean?

also, when you encode a dvd9 in xvid, does it copy the whole menu and menu structure?

And no, the menu structures are only part of the DVD.
