View Full Version : First attempt at ripping and need Region code advice

Hello there,

Let me start by saying I own the DVDs in question (2 of them), I have never done any of this thing before, but I aquired 2 new DVDs from a swaps forum - and they are Region 1 - I need Region 2.

I have read up on DVD2SVCD and feel reasonably confident about the ripping process - however, I am puzzled about changing or deleting the Region 1code. Although I have found some threads on the subject, what I really need to know is - is it worth the effort. Can I just delete the coding using DVD region free or is there something else I need to know before I start.

Many thanks for your time,

Alex

Hello and welcome to the forum-

I'm not entirely sure I understand the question. If you're going to be decrypting the DVD to your hard drive prior to encoding (to PAL DVD, SVCD, .avi, whatever), DVD Decrypter will remove all DVD encryption, Macrovision protection, as well as the region protection.

Here's DVD Decrypter (http://www.doom9.org/Soft21/Rippers/SetupDVDDecrypter_3.2.2.0.exe). I forget what DVD2SVCD uses for this (VStrip, maybe), but whatever it uses, it'll do the same thing.

Aha - then I was confusing myself - I just assumed a copy was literally a copy of all the original code, and would work as such.

Thanks for the reply,

Alex

i hope you dont mind me jumping in on your thread but i have a related question.
can a dvd burner rip dvd's from other regions onto a hard drive, then re-code it onto a dvd-r so it will play in the region you're in?
what i'd like to do is buy japan music video dvd's, but since they wont play on US dvd players, id like to rip them and put them on dvd-r to play on US dvd players. im already starting a project of compiling music videos onto dvd-r, it'd be nice to mix in some j-pop :).
correct me if im wrong, im assuming there's software that will allow you to play dvds from any region (if the computer dvd drive cant do that already). but i dont want to buy the dvd just to watch on the computer.
before i go out and start buying these japan music dvds i want to make sure it will be able to play on my home or car dvd player in the end.

No, it is not possible to copy a DVD without recompressing to change region code. If you recompress/reauthor of course you can create a region free disc. Dont forget about the DVD9-DVD5 difference.
You can also try region code hack on your standalone. See www.videohelp.com about this.

"No, it is not possible to copy a DVD without recompressing to change region code."

Are you sure about that? Ripping (including Macrovision removal and Region free) then burning does just that. No recompression. Assuming the original is a DVD5 of course.

Yeah, I agree with ejones. Even though Japan is R2, it's also NTSC, so making it region free should be enough to be able to burn to R1 US without re-encoding. And DVD Decrypter won't have any problem ripping the files to your hard drive, even with an R1 non-region free DVD-ROM. You're not actually playing the DVD, so you don't have to use up one of your 5 region changes before it gets locked to the final region. I have some Japanese DVDs, and have never had a problem.

@skamikaze
You're confusing TV system difference (PAL/NTSC) with DVD region. They have nothing to do with each other. It's just a coincidence that all region 1 DVD (North America) are NTSC. Do as manono said above, and you'll be fine, at least when it comes to the Japanese DVD. If you try to play European or Chinese DVD then it might create an inconvenience for you.
