View Full Version : Way to rip to 4 gig using Divx *and* keep menus?

OK, Here is what I'm doing now: Using DVDshrink to make a 4.3 gig version of my original DVD, so it all fits nicely on a CDR. But I hate the fact that it's still MPEG2 and at a lower bit rate so it looks rather bad. But I love the menu's and especially the extras that DVD's have.
SO is there an easy tool that allows me to make a full featured copy of my DVD's with menu's, extras, and good sound BUT WITH A MODERN CODEC ?
That's all I ask. I play everything on a PC, I don't need Mpeg2.
I don't have time to re-author or hand program a new menu system, nor do most casual users.
There has to be a way to do this easily, by now, right ? ( fingers crossed)

Thanks!

Why don't you just rip the entire DVD as is and keep all the 7Gb of it (or whatever it takes)? No modern codec would make MPEG-2 look better. It makes sense to convert to DivX if you want to reduce the size of the movie and put it on CD-R, or put several movies on one DVDR without menus. Apparently, HDD space is not an issue for you, so why bother using DVD Shrink.

what you're asking for is not possible, sorry mate...
you cannot combine mpeg4 with a normal dvd (=mpeg2) menu

I've tested with 'modern codecs' and it makes a big difference. If you let a divx movie take up 3 gig, it looks just as good as the original mpeg2 movie at 6 gig.
Even the film grain is preserved.
I still want to keep movies on DVD's, not hard drives.
It would be amazing if someone could figure out a way to hack the normal dvd structure to use mpeg4. Everytime it calls the mpeg2 codec, it gets the mpeg4 ( divx) codec.
Well, thats my dream method , at least.

Sorry, I said CDR when I ment DVD R .

Why would I make a 4 gig AVI ? For quality ! I like to see the original quality of the DVD. The old days of a 700 meg divx were awfull. Divx is better than mpeg2, but I'd say only 2X on the data rate reduction. Perfect for a DVD R .

I'll check out MP4, any links to help me there?
Thanks!

but there is no automatic dvd menu structures -> mp4 menu stuctures converter existing, which means you have to do it by hand, which is not that easy, but much easier now with my "envivio" script i posted about here (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=76735)

it can also be played in wmp9, quicktime and realplayer and any dshow based player
