View Full Version : TMPGEnc 3.0 vs 2.5 for DivX file

With TMPGenc 2.5, I can open DivX file with ffdshow.
But I can not open DivX file with TMPGEnc3.0+ffdshow.

Does anyone know what to do ?
I want to use TMPGEnc 3.0 because Pegasys says the video
quelity is enhanced in 3.0.

Thanks,

You don't need 3.0XPress. They just corrected the B-Frame-Bug. In 2.5x, set B-Picture Spoilage to 0 and the quality will be the same.

Thanks a lot for the reply.
I'll use 2.5.

hey, but wait guys, don't just dismiss the new version. I've got a problem with it too, don't know whether it's the same as the one the guy above has. I am basically unable to open avi mpeg4 encoded files in TMPGEnc xpress - xvid/divx. I am trying and the prog says "unable to open". So how do I solve this problem? Needless to say all codecs are installed on my system and the previous version of TMPGEnc works fine with divx files.

funny enough TMPGEnc xpress is able to open mpeg files. ehh, wait a minute. that's kind of senseless. I need the programme to reencode avi to mpeg, if I already have an mpeg file, I certainly won't load it in TMPGEnc, unless it's corrupted, then I'll remultiplex it, but apart from that, I need avi files to be opened in TMPGEnc. any solution?

Strange, even with my objections that it doesn't open .avs scripts in YV12 I gave the trial version a whirl and it didn't have any problems opening material encoded in DivX or Xvid, and I haven't noticed it to be slow either, I actually found it substantially faster than 2.5 with equivalent settings used.

Maybe I have just been lucky?

EDIT: I have found a problem with some of my avi sources after all, those encoded with divx 3 ;) codecs (fast or slow motion), I got the same problem noted by WRFan.

I did discover a workaround however. By using a simple AviSynth script I managed to get TMPGEnc xpress trial to open the problem files. (The script simply contained AVISource("problem file name")).

You may want to give that a try WRFan and see how it goes.

P.S. Can someone see if TMPGenc 2.5 opens divx 3 files directly? (I would but I don't have TMPGenc 2.5 installed on my machine any longer, and I can't remember if it was a problem or not)

No problem to open DivX3-Files in TMPGEnc 2.5x. But this may depent on the Decoder you have installed. I have still the old Codec on my Machine.

Can you give me more info about this ?
I installed "AviSynth scripts serving" from ffdshow-20040520.exe
but I still can not open DivX avi file with TMPGEnc Xpress 3.0.

ah, ok, I think I got it.

download this file:

http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=57023&package_id=105994&release_id=225100

install, then create a new *.avs file, insert the path to the video file:

AVISource("pathTo\name.avi")

and load the avs file in TMPGEnc Xpress

Thanks for the feedback Kika, much appreciated.

WRFan, sorry I didn't get back to you sooner (but work frowns on Internet usage for private purposes during work hours), but you seem to have figured it out, and I assumed most people on the forums would be familiar with AviSynth my apologies. :o

Let me know if it works for you please.

yes, seems to work fine. I re-encoded a small video sample from divx3 to mpeg2, using an AviSynth script did the trick, TMPGEnc accepted the avi file.

but I still don't understand whether this behaviour is a bug or intentional. Hasn't the TMPGEnc dveloper noticed the problem? If it's a bug I hope it will be fixed soon.

Glad it worked for you WRFan. :)

It is probably unintentional but probably won't be classed as a bug, here is the disclaimer from specifications on the Pegasys site:

We only support uncompressed AVI and MS-DV Type2 format AVI. Since the ability to encode AVI files using other types of codec is dependent on the codec environment, we cannot guarantee that it works

it's not Pegasus' duty to provide the necessary codecs or to ensure that they work properly, but they have to provide proper directshow support in their programme in order for the programme to be able to actually use the codecs installed on the system. anyway, hope they'll fix this
