which program is required to merge 3 seperate avi files into 1 mpeg file suitable for authoring then burning to dvd

actually, you don't want to merge the threee avis (unless they are one movie), but rather keep them as seperate instances (vob sets). If you do want to merge them to one stream, be aware of the fact that you will most likely encounter heavy sync issues!

You can use the new TMPGEnc 3.0 for this. They've added a source window link in the DVDAuthor. So You can load all three parts into it and encode it as one movie.
I did this with one movie I got on 3 cds. It goes fine, and now syncprobs.
