How can I extract small clips for filter testing?

This might not be the correct forum for this question , but my purpose is to test the avi filters so I thought I'd start here...

How can I extract, say, small 10 min clip from my original DVD VTS files for testing? I've tried taking small VTS files and running them with Roxio, but they won't read.

I'd like to be able to take some small segments of source material I will be filtering so that I don't have to go through the whole DVD before seeing results.

From another newbie (me):
You can also use DvdShrink to extract a portion of video once you've gotten it onto your HD with DvdDecrypter (see the "Re Author" function). IMHO an easier way to do it as it's interactive and you're probably looking for a particular bit of video to test that filter against. Just be sure the compression is "none" and AFAICT it just extracts.

You can use VobEdit to cut your vobs.

that's what I did - I used the 'start' and 'end' frame select in reauthor, and it was by far the easiest way to select a clip for me.
