DVD-R DL?

Hello,
we have a new DVD-R standalone-player. And now I want to buy a DVD-R burner. But because I would use it for movies, I'd like to use doublelayer DVD. Till now I only found informations about DVD+R DL. Will there ever be DVD-R DL? If yes, when?

There will probably be DVD-RL, but not before Christmas.

BTW, Verbatim has announced that that the formerly mentioned price of 5€ per disc does not work out, and that discs will be 15 Euro per piece, and that this won't change too soon.

It's either a DVD player or a DVD recorder, and if it's new, you'll have the same problems with either DVD formats (usually none at all). DVD-R DL will also have a new disc type thus creating the same playback problems there are with DVD+R DL.

Oh, and by Christmas there'll be 4x DVD+R DL drives (supposedly, as with everything else, it's there if you can get it in stores).

Sorry, I don't understand this answer. My English isn't as great!
I have the DVD-Player Panasonic DMR-E55 http://www.dvdplayers.co.uk/php/showitem.php?pid=401 which only supports DVD-Ram and DVD-R.
Now I want to make copies of my dvd collection with my PC. But because I haven't a DVD burner on my PC I have to buy one.
After that answers I don't really know if I sould wait with buying a DVD-R burner or not.

EDIT: Or do you think that it can playback DVD+R (DL)?

what you have is a standalone DVD-R recorder, not a player ;) I looked the recorder up at videohelp.com but there's no mention of what formats it supports when it comes to playback so I can't tell you if it can handle DVD+R DL or plain DVD+R.

Anyway, I think it's safe to assume that if a device can't handle DVD+R DL it won't be able to handle DVD-R DL. Most players that can't handle DVD+R choke because the disc identifier type says DVD+R which they don't know.. similarly, DVD+R DL is an unknown disc type for some standalones and many DVD-ROM drives for PCs.

Now, as for double layer.. are you prepared to pay up to 15€ (that's CHF 22.50 - not far from the average price of an original DVD disc) per disc? Licensing restrictions for dual layer media are a lot stricter than for single layer media so don't expect prices of dual layer media as fast as it happend with single layer media. So, until prices really drop, you're better off either sacrifying quality and make a backup on a DVD-R/+R or buy a 2nd disc.
