Hi everyone, i'm a complete novice at this so bear with me. I'm trying to back-up a dvd to vcd format using DVD2SVCD, but my system resets itself when BeSweet is running. This is the last few lines of the log.
--------------------------------------------------------
- 11/06/2004 20:33:10
- Free on drive C: 92647.81 mb
- AUDIO conversion
--------------------------------------------------------
Encoding Audio. Filename: C:\Program Files\DVD2SVCD\Movie\Extracted_audio_1.ac3
Executing BeSweet. Commandline:
"C:\Program Files\DVD2SVCD\BeSweet\BeSweet.exe" -core( -input "C:\Program Files\DVD2SVCD\Movie\Extracted_audio_1.ac3" -output "C:\PROGRA~1\DVD2SVCD\Movie\Encoded_audio_1.mp2" -logfile "C:\PROGRA~1\DVD2SVCD\Movie\Encoded_audio_1.log" ) -azid( -L -3db -C 0db -S 0db -c normal -s surround -g max ) -2lame( -e -b 224 -m s )
Anyone had this problem who can suggest a solution? Thanks in advance.

have you tried running besweet manually using the command line stated in the log?

Thanks for the reply. Downloaded BeSweet GUI, ran the wizard to the end, i was then asked if i wanted to create a log file. What do i put in there? Am i going about this the right way?
Thanks.

Sod all happened. Program was over before it even got going. Didn't have any problems last week, ran from start to finish - no probs. Are there many things that can affect a rip and convert?

Hi.
A couple of things for starters.
Firstly, if you still have the file Encoded_audio_1.log.txt in your output folder could you please cut and paste the contents.
You may also wish to look at Q53 in the Q+A Sticky (http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?threadid=21859) .

Thanks Nick. I haven't overclocked and i have 1GB memory. Do i still need to run 'MemTest'? Anyway, here's the log you asked for.

Well it definitely can't hurt. memtest is checking your memory for general stability aswell as errors, so it doesn't really matter how much memory you have!

Hmmm.
BeSweet doesn't actually do anything according to that log!
Is the input file C:\Program Files\DVD2SVCD\Movies\Extracted_audio_1.ac3 actually present?!
If so, does it play OK in Media Player?
As for MemTest, Killingspree is absolutely correct. Your PC may be a powerful beast with ample memory. However, until you run something that really puts it under strain, you'll never know if it's stable or not. A flaky memory chip may well not show up running resource-light programs like office suites but under the sort of loading BeSweet puts it under, the fault may be exposed. So yes, test your machine's stability with the suggested tools and rule out a hardware problem before we look too hard at software issues.

Yes Nick, file plays fine!
I presume to run MemTest, i'm going to need a floppy drive, yes? The reason i ask is that i never used the one on my old pc, so when i had my new one made up, i didn't ask them to to put one in. If i need one, my shop supplies - Alps, Mitsumi and Sony. Will any one do?
Thanks for your help so far.

IIRC you don't need a floppy drive for Memtest86.
The website has downloads for image files to make a bootable CDR.
Simply download the ISO image, burn it to a CDR with your favourite software, then go into the BIOS and set CDROM as first-choice boot device it should then run from the CD.

I'm having real problems with the image file i downloaded. It's an .IMG file not an .ISO, tried Nero and CDRWIN, no joy. Tried converting it to an ISO using ULTRAISO and MAGICISO, no joy there either. I even tried just renaming it. Anyone know an idiot-proof way to burn this file to CD?
Thanks in advance.

http://www.memtest86.com/memtest86-3.1a.iso.zip
This is an iso file.
Give it a go.
After all the trouble you've had trying to run this I almost hope it gives some useful results! Although perhaps not, as fixing any problems it finds may be expensive..!

Ready to go now, fingers crossed, but this will be the first time i've attempted anything like this so i don't want to balls it up. Let me see if i've got this right.
Start up PC, enter bios settings, change 1st boot device as cdrom drive, save changes. memtest will run from cd. When finished and results logged, reboot, enter bios settings and set back to default.
Save changes. Does this sound ok?
Thanks.

Sounds good to me.
In case either you or the PC maker have changed any bios settings, whne you've finished rather than use the "Load BIOS defaults" option most BIOS's have, just change the boot order back to how you originally found it, then save and exit.
Good luck.

Ran 20 passes on MemTest,no problems. Ran Prime95 stress test, PC froze. Ran 'CPU Stability Test' whilst running 'Motherboard Monitor', alarm sounded as CPU temperature exceeded 158 farenheit. Looks like a CPU and/or cooling problem, yes? What now?

Take the side off your computer case and do the Prime95 torture test. If you have one, point a floor fan at the open side of your PC. If it does not fail the test then you are going to have to get more ventilation/Fans in the case. Simple as that. Good luck.

When you have the sides off your PC, make sure there is plenty of clearance above the CPU fan. In smaller boxes the power supply can sometimes obstruct free airflow from the CPU fan. My first system used to overheat and by removing the power supply unit and making it external it cooled down to the tune of 7-8 degrees Celsius.
And because it then had a nice vent hole in the back it even ran cool with the side of the case on! :)
Do note that if the system is under warrany such messing may invalidate it. In this case it may be worth taking this problem up with your supplier.
EDIT - Another thing you could look at is underclocking - ie running your CPU at a lower speed to generate less heat. I kinda get the impression that you are not one to tinker with such settings but try a search of the hardware forum if you want to do some reading. Alternatively if you have any nerdish mates who might be able to help out it might do the trick.
Cheers

I must say i'm not happy with the company who put my machine together, i specifically asked for components that could easily handle the stresses of online-gaming,etc.
Anyway, will try the suggestions.
Thanks again.

Braindead, what mobo and cpu do you have? What type of CPU cooler are you using?
Braindead
20th June 2004, 16:02
Hey DDogg. It's a 2.20 gigahertz AMD Athlon XP on an MSI KT6 Delta, MS-6590 version 2. As for the cooler, i wouldn't know without looking. Maybe it's the bog standard one that comes with the board??
When i've got the side off and tried the external fan method, i'll let you know more.
Found out that there is a 'SV3.0 cooler fan copper core Xp3000' inside. It was ticked off on my original order form. Don't know wether it's for the CPU or the case.

Looks like problem solved. Replaced existing heatsink and fan with heavy duty one, added an extra case fan and a heat extractor fan. Torture test ran ok. Backed up same DVD that i had the original problem with, without any hitches.
Thanks to everyone for their help.
