View Full Version : Looking for decent sites to explain the basics of AVI and the various codecs

So far I have only ran across sites that discuss coding & decoding AVI's for people that already seem to have a basic grasp of how they are built. I have been encoding for awhile & now I feel it's time I should learn something more about what I am doing, other than what the best settings are for a particular size disk vs.quality. I want to learn enough about AVI's to know WHY these are good (or bad) settings. I've worked on TV's for years & I know how a particular part in it works & what it is for. I could not have learned that without school & experience. I can carry on a decent conversation & make intelligent comments & suggestions conserning this. Now I am looking for the same thing in AVI codec's.
Where can I go to start the learning process? For instance, What defines an AVI frame from say, a regular bitmap? How is the motion defined? When someone suggests using dctfilter.dll for smoothing a picture, or removing noise, what does sine & cosine have to DO with a frame to begin with? I guess you get the idea at this point. I am looking for "AVI for IDIOTS" or "Dummys Guide to AVI".
Anyone know some good sites for this? Anywhere that you can point me too on this board, for instance? I'm just tired of being ignorant.
Ah well... Thanks for reading this anyway.
