After some inactive period due to computer changes, I tried v. 0.52 on two movies, one PAL, the other NTSC and tested them on the Philips 743.
Well, ALL problems reported earlier by me ARE GONE!
No stuttering at the beginning, no jumping to second chapter by it's own, no navigational problems (pause not working.)
Mind you that was only a quick testing. I'll watch one of them tonight and report tomorrow.
Other with problem players (mainly old Philips') could confirm?

I haven't tested yet version 0.52
I want to try tonight with "Master and commander" Pal region 2.
With version 0.51 i have tried with "LOTR-Return of the King" and everything is ok while with "Paycheck" i have again on Philips 612 the stop at the beginning of the first chapter.

I rebuilded a third DVD (NTSC), watched it, and still no probs :)
Things are going smoothly.

Great! I can bury my philips bash-hammer ;)
Such a small error and such a variety of problems. Quite a relief for jdobbs I hope.

LOL!! While I am almost 100% sure that all Philips related problems are gone (my 743 is THE test machine for out of norm DVDs) I would wait for a definite report from robgarib. I had the same problems as he did with 0.51, but not with 0.52. His 612 is another strange beast. Meanwhile I am rebuilding away :)

With 0.52 Master and Commander Pal region 2 is ok on Philips 612.
I want to try in the next days with Paycheck (the movie that stutters with version 0.51).

I still routinely get bitrate peaks of 10600+ when I forget to manually reduce the birate limit...and yes, this is with progressive-source material. This results in stutters.
I also get stutter/audio dropouts (more of the latter) at chapter breaks toward the end of a movie.
So I don't think we can close the book on stutters by any means.

Are you using CCE or QEnc?

Hi Noah!
One quick question.
How do you manually reduce the bitrate limit?
Thanks in advance,

To set a global max, add this line under [Options] in rebuilder.ini:
max_bitrate=xxxx (obviously don't use xxxx ;) )
Or, on a per disc/per cell basis, edit the vbr_brate_max variable in rebuilder.ecl. If you're having problems with stuttering, you may also want to prevent huge swings in bitrate (increase VBR_Bias) and raise the minimum bitrate (min_bitrate in rebuilder.ini, [Options] or vbr_brate_min in rebuilder.ecl).
BTW, there are corresponding values for opv bitrate in rebuilder.ecl, opv_brate_min and opv_brate_max.

Just to clarify my biggest current issue with stuttering...I'm getting more of an audio dropout phenomenon (no visible video issue) at chapter breaks (but not every one) usually towards the end of a disc. This is on set-top players only. This seems to be independent of any bitrate issues. The media is good and tests a very low error rate.
I don't know much about the mechanics of how this works, but I'm wondering if there might be an issue with the way Rebuilder remuxes the audio back in. Chapter breaks are usually (always?) the break points of different cells, right? Maybe these transitions are not handled gracefully (technical term ;) ) enough for set-top players.

Noah: most importantly what is the type and make of your standalone player?

Its a Mitsubishi DD-6020 which is a rebadged Toshiba SD-4700. I see the same phenomenon on a cheapo Cyberhome CH300, though, so I don't think the player is the deciding factor. The Cyberhome reads just about anything you can put on an optical disc. Maybe some DVD players don't have this problem, but both of mine do. So whether you call it a bug or not, I see it as something that could be improved.
EDIT: BTW, in both cases I've got the digital out from the players connected to receivers, which do the decoding. I suppose I should see if I get the same dropout from the players' analog outs. What happens is that the receivers lose the digital signal for a moment, which results in a brief loss of sound. I've never had any problems, similar or otherwise, with DVDs from Shrink or similar programs.

I Have just started trying out DVD-RB, and I had thought everything was working great. I have done 4 backups using RB v.52, and they all seemed to play fine when I checked them quickly (Read as , thrown in standalone, made sure they started, skip to different chapters, made sure audio/subtitles were in sync near end, etc.)
However, I actually sat down to watch one of these and discovered this Stuttering problem. I then checked all 4 titles, and they all seem to do it, some less than others. My actual stuttering problem seems to occur in various parts, but not at chapter changes or cell changes.
I have tried the discs in question on two different Sony Players, both of which are several years apart. I did notice that my crappy cheapo Mintek Player doesn't seem to have the same problem.
I was using DVD-RB with CCE 2.5.
Seems a shame, because I was so excited witht the way DVD-RB was working, but now will be leary to use it anymore, because I am uncertain of how to verify if its fixed in future versions without having to watch every title I burn.

I agree. Even though I have yet to experience any stuttering myself I am still using Nero Recode for all my backups as I dont always want to watch them all the way through.
Once all the problems are fixed then I will start to use it for more than just experimenting.

Probably you're using bad media. Try a different DVD-R brand and see if these stuttering problems keep going on.
