Avisynth newbie question

Top of the morning.


I'm following the avisynth guide on its main web site. And I keep geeting this error when I load the first simple AVISource script: "AVISource: couldn't locate a decompressor for fourcc xvid". I get an likewise error when I try to open an mpeg source. I have 2.54 installed and am using mplayer2 to play. I am not a total newbie in using Avisynth but i am lost trying to write a script. What am I missing here?
