View Full Version : What's up with MMC v. 9?

I just installed MMC 9. Pretty cool. A lot slicker than 8.5. However, following the install I could not playback my recently captured and TMPGEnc encoded MPEG2 files either in MMC or WMP. I could play dl'ed and old Mpeg2's just fine. I assumed my codec got screwed. I reinstalled the codec pack. No help. But, during the third re-install of MMC I actually read the little pop-up warning about not having a DVD decoder installed. I've seen this during the 2 previous upgrades since they took away the DVD playback on my $400 card. This time I took it to heart. I went out found a DVD/MPEG2 player on the web and dl it. Suddenly WMP, MMC, and the new player will play all those files just fine. I used a codec util to see if the codec changed and no it didn't. I had re-installed both WMP and MMC several times. I deleted the codecs and reinstalled them several times. The warning during the MMC said that MPEG2 playback may be affected until I install the MMC DVD (and send them some $ to get back a feature I already paid for once  ). What on earth is going on? What possible difference could installing a third party DVD decoder do for raw MPEG2 files? Why would old ones play and not new ones? More to the point, when my 30 days expires on this trialware decoder program will I lose MPEG2 again?
