Japanese researchers of company NHK currently work on the successor of the current HDTV, baptized UHDTV (U like Ultra).

The UHDTV is able to post not less than 32 million pixels, that is to say a maximum resolution of 7 680 X 4 320 pixels. For Information, a traditional television posts the equivalent of 200 000 pixels (480 horizontal lines) and the HDTV a maximum of 2 million pixels (1 980 X 1 080 pixels). This new format is able to deliver 60 images per seconds. Audio side, the researchers envisage a sound on 22.2 channels, only that.

Let us pass to the impressive figures! To store vidéos numerical UHDTV during 18 minutes, one would need a space of 3,5 téraoctets, or the equivalent of 750 DVD.

This format could be integrated on screens measuring up to 11,4 meters of diagonal (or 450 inches), in movie theaters.

One crowned home cinema... There are time to see it arriving on our premises.

I'll tell you what I think about this, this is what HDTV SHOULD have been, the current HDTV specs is what DVD SHOULD have been :)

Ultra-HDTV is a good choice for movie theaters. A real jump in picture quality. People who have seen digital movies don't seem to think the picture quality is much improved over traditional film.

Current digitial movie projecters are only HDTV resolution. I have criticized this for being unambitious and an invitiation to piracy... I mean, if you can watch HDTV at home, you're not going to get better quality at the theater (a bigger screen at the expense of sharpness). The theater industry needs to keep ahead of mainstream consumer video.

It probably will take some time before this hits the consumer market when you look at the specs:

In test, an 18-minute UHDV video gobbled up 3.5 terabytes of storage (equivalent to about 750 DVD's). The data was transmitted over 16 channels at a total rate of 24 gigabits per second.'

Wow 33 million pixels per frame. This is greater than imax film!

Personally I would prefer more research into holographic TV... but I guess this will have to do in the mean time!
