Shock horror... Doom9 writes (on the main site) the following: -
How fast will we eventually be able to write on dual layer media? At least 8x speed seems to be possible according to the DVD+RW alliance. They held a symposium in Taipei on patent licensing and product certification for 16 DVD+R, 8x DVD+RW and 8x DVD+R DL drives and discs. They also introduced a new anti-piracy technology dubbed as Vidi that should work hand in hand with the broadcast flag that is soon to be introduced on US TV broadcasts. Fast DVD burning is one thing but a new method of copy protection is another!

I'll do some more research because there was a report into a similar digital TV system 'waiting in the wings' over here in Euro-land.
