I have been searching Doom9 threads & using suggestions, mainly on recommended media & DVD burning technique. My Problem: 50-50% chance of success in DVD back-up, skipping occurs during chapters, usually at the end of movie. I have succeeded using Ritek G03 DVD-R (which burns x1), but hard to find & purchase this media.

I use the following equipment/procedure for DVD back-up:
- Pentium III 1 GHz, WIN2K, DVD Shrink 3.17 (very nice software).
- Lite-on LDW 851S DVD±RW drive with GS0C firmware, set as Primary Slave.
- Ritek G04 DVD-R (1 coaster out of 1 burn), Optodisc R004 DVD-R (almost all coasters) & KHypermedia (some coasters).
- Rip & Encode with DVD Shrink to Hard Drive as ISO image, then burn with Sonic RecordNow DX.

I think DVD Shrink is working fine, but I suspect burning speed is culprit (since Ritek G03 media works every time). I set burning speed to "MIN" in RecordNOW, but DVD always burns at x4 speed (completed 4.4Gb burn in about 15-20 min). When I try burning with DVD Decrypter (instead of RecordNow) & set speed to x1, actual burning speed seems to revert to x4 (completes a full DVD5 in 15-20 min).

I'm running out of options. Today, I shall change IDE config to Secondary Master for DVD±RW drive & test the burn. Never tried Nero. Does anyone have input to help me out?

Hi & welcome to the board,

you might want to try a more recent firmware like GS0F or GS0H, available from e.g. rpc1.org. Also try their forum for a discussion of the relative merits of the different firmware revisions.

smiller's advice will give you a solid boost, and a better understanding of firmware and how to use it. This is the first thing to try in order of importance, IMHO.

When errors occur near the end of the disc, it's almost always a media problem, use this link (http://www.videohelp.com/dvdwriters) to check out your burner as far as what others are using for media, and their reported results. If the Riteks work for you, by all means try to purchase a large spindle. :)

I'd try some of these suggestions before I re-configured my IDE settings, I don't really think this is the root of your problem, or even a contributing factor. If it turns out to be, please let us know.

Several procedures can get your files to the burner successfully; I've used Nero almost exclusively and have yet to have a failure burning the .ISO that Shrink produces. In the Nero Burning ROM 6 interface, click on "Recorder" in the menu bar > select "Burn Image" from the drop-down list > navigate to the .ISO that Shrink has created for you > You've got it! (Also, under Recorder > Choose Recorder, make sure your DVD-RW drive is selected, if you've several devices installed, this can easily be overlooked!)

smiller & ammck55,

Thanks for the input. I have changed my IDE config and it does not seem to make any noticeable difference. Still experience skipping during playback (on both PC & standalone DVD player).

Now, I started using Ritek G04 and skipping still occurs, usually in the beginning of disc and somewhere in the middle of chapters within a movie. Tried both 4.5Gb and smaller 4.1Gb ISO image files, but skips/pixelations still evident. I intend to download Nero 6 trial & give that a shot. I am still convinced that if I burn at x1 speed for a media that supports x1 (i.e. Ritek G03), burning video will be successful.

I doubt it's DVD Shrink's problem. Will try Nero, then the Lite-on firmware upgrade, then other types of media (DVD+R & DVD+RW).

Its most likely poor quality media.
Buy yourself Datasafe Ritek G04 as these are the best quality ones around. Ritek play a little game with grading their media, and sell
the poor quality and failed media from their factories to people
like Landscape, Grade "A", Arita, so Ritek g04 means nothing at
all unless it's linked to a distributor that insists on the quality
disks.

I performed test burns of ISO files (4.1 - 4.4Gb files) using Nero 6.3.1.15 at x2 speed and there's still skipping in my DVD video. Media was Ritek G04. I am going to revert to Ritek G03 x1 speed to perform further testing. I seem to have better luck at lower burning speeds. Unfortunately Ritek G04 DVD-R does not support x1 speed (only x2 & x4).

This skipping is unacceptable on my Sony DAV C990 (5-disc), but playable on another Panasonic RP56 standalone.

I will also try burning other media like DVD+RW.
