View Full Version : only part of the movie gets encoded

I have been using GKnot to convert some DV home movies to DivX5. everytime I use it I seem to have a few strange problems. This time the first thing that I notice is when I load my avi only a portion of the frames are shown on the display screen. I edit the script by adding the line trim(0,27804) to include the entire movie.

I finnaly converted the movie and only about half of it is converted. Please review my script and my gk log and let me know if you can see where I went wrong. I will apprecieate any guidance or suggestions. This is the coolest program when it works for me. I just need a little help understanding where I keep going wrong. Thanks

You may be adjusting the frame count in the .avs, but you might also want to adjust the frame count in Gknot's calculator in order to get the proper bitrate calculations prior to encoding.

I also note you've not done any compressibility tests; so you may end up with undersized (or oversized) results.

I'm not sure what you mean by "half is converted" since the encoding sees all 27805 frames.Have you tried DirectShowSource() rather than AviSource()?

What happens when you don't add the Trim() filter?

Thanks for the reply. :) > I didn't know about GK's internal calculator so I will see if I can figure out how to make adjustments there.
I will also have to read the guide again for the part about compressibility test. So that is the reason why I havent done that test. I just kinda eyeballed it based on what I have seen converted in the past.

What I meant by half converted is misleading. I assumed that since my final movie only had 14688 frames that is was only partially encoded.

I will give DirectShowSource a try but I thought I read in doom9's DV forum sticky that for type 1 DV avisource shoud be used.

The last time I entered the trim line the entire movie encoded was 17753 frames. When I first load the avi into GK. It says that only 17753 frames are present. From the very beginning of the encoding GK does not see the last portion of the movie.

Thanks for your help again, I have a few things to try and I'm sure that I will get back to you to let you know how this progresses.

It seems like the first pass encoding is working ok but shortly after the second pass the encoding stops. I have tried many of your suggestions.

I adjusted GK's calculator and I used directshow instead of avsisource. some thing funny is still going on. Below I have attached my GK log and avisynth script again. If you have the time again, I would really appreciate you taking a peak and seeing if you see where I screwed up this time.
Thanks in advance. I appreciate your time.

You're correct. The second pass, in this example, only runs for 3.5 minutes.

You may have an error logged by VdubMod in your WinXP event log. Run your Event Viewer, and see if any errors were logged in the System or Application log 6/2 at 12:33:41, when the second pass ended.

I checked the event logger but I didn't see ant ewrrors around this time. What should I look at or where can i look in GK to see if anything is funny with my second pass settings. I'm getting closer here but something is still not right. Could it be my source is goofy? I appreciate your input.

Thanks in advance,

VC

Hey I finally had some success with this file. I think I will give on this one and go tot he next famile video. I have one question and hopefully you might be able to answer?
After the first scan, ireceived an error message that said "source image format is not acceptable error code-2.

I pressed ok and vdub mod rapidly completed the conversion and wrote my avi file from the avi_movie file. The result worked but I was wondering if you have an idea what this error may have meant. I promise I wont bother you anymore on this one. I'm ready to proceed. I just want to make the next go around work a little better.

Thanks in advance,

VC

I think i have a very similar issue. I open an AVI file in GNot (captured from TV using Picvideo MJPEG and edited out commercials.)
The AVI file has 35366 frames, 23mins 34sec, bbut Gknot only detects it as 19409 frames and 12min 56sec.

In the Save and Encode window,i can only preview up to the 19409 frames. I have no logs to post - I havent done a conversion yet. (starting one now anyway)
I have tested this on 4 other AVI files and they all are truncated at a similar point, just over halfway. I also tested on another PC and still get these problems.

In http://forum.doom9.org/showthread.php?s=&postid=454787 there's an error code -2 in the 2nd pass, because of incorrect codec settings. It's XviD, not DivX, but you may want to check your first and second pass settings to make sure they're set properly.

In addition, there may be a registry problem in windows that can cause this symptom, though I've not seen it as a 2nd pass problem:

Ihave looked into my issue further and its not in the Codec settings.I have reproduced the fault in a curious sort of way.

Using the same source file an AVI captured in MJPEG with 1Ch Mono Audio, then used Besweet to convert to 2Ch Mono in two different Applications an exciting coincidence occurs;
- In Giordian Knot the Save and Encode window only sees the file up to frame 19409, but it will encode the entire file normally.
- In DVD2SVCD the extracted audio is truncated at at frame 19409.

Frame 19409 is 12 mins 8 secs in to the video. This also coincides with the Audio shrinking to that time period before i converted it from 1Ch mono to 2 Ch mono.

Another point to note is that in Giordian Knot step above there is no audio in that file.

I have a feeling thatthis is because my Source file audio is 44.1khz.

interesting observation that it maybe audio related. The clip that I was working with when I first started this thread had alot of funny things going on with the audio. I had tried something new for me by adding background music to the home movies and I aalso had to resample the frequency from 44.1 to 48 and some denoising. The two videos that i have worked with since I made this post have not has the problem with the opening screens seeing all of the frames and the audio was untouchd in these cases. I'll have to keep that in mind in the future. I'm not sure how audio would be related to the video in GK because the video file that I work with has no audio muxed with it.

I have also recaptured with the audio at Mono, but this time 48000khz and this problem no longer occurs.

I think we solved it!

but yeah, why did it affect the file without any audio in it....
