I'd like to capture MPEG-2 in realtime via firewire.
Is it possible under linux?
Thanks in advance for the replies.

Have you tried mplayer/mencoder? Are you able to use the firewire device in linux and view what is being played? If you are you can try to use
mencoder -ovc lavc -lavcopts vcodec=mpeg2video. Capturing realtime really depends on your harware so if your PC can take it there should be no problem. In general libavcodec is quite fast.
