hi guys, this is my first post and im pretty sure its not been covered already as i have had a good look through previous posts.i am trying to bacup dvd's to my HD using dvd shrink 3 beta 5 but my laptop shutsdown halfway though after whiring away like ive just asked it to run the world its a pentium 4 2.6 with 5oo odd ram etc etc so should be more than up to the job.it has managed to complete a few discs before but it really doesnt like it.ive tried shutting down as many progs as possible before and not using it whilst its doing its thing but 9 times out of 10 it will suddenly power down with no warning.i have tried running dvd shrink in lowest priority mode under task manager with no joy.
is there a different program i could use or a less labour intensive program?? i think the newer dvd shrink had an option to not be priority task but i kept getting copy protection errors on that version so tried the older one as suggested on here.
any ideas folks?? keep em simple cause i aint no pc genius
cheers

With the cofiguration you give, overloading does not seem to be the explanation. Heat build-up in the CPU for some reason might cause this. You might also wish to take look at your Switch Mode Power Supply.
Have you tried some other back-up tools, like the excellent DVDDecrypter (http://www.dvddecrypter.com/) ?
If you'd like to go for MPEG-4 (e.g., XviD) encoding later for near-DVD quality picture in one or two ordinary CD-Rs, you can give AutoGordianKnot (http://www.autogk.net) a try.
Regards.

I had a similar issue with my previous P3 based notebook. It was a slimline unit so everything was packed in tight. Over here in Australia we can really get some summertime heat and I used to have issues with it cutting out part way through a encode.
I ended up making sure I had lifted the notebook off my desk with a couple of 15mm dowels. This provided enough space to allow a reasonable airflow under the base of the notebook (which used to get hot enough to cook an egg).
My current P4 based unit (a HP nx9010 with similar processor/ram specs to your unit) hasn't yet failed but it seems to generate a fairly good airflow from its fan (certainly it is loud enough). I still make sure to lift it up from the desk to allow for the extra heat dissipation.
I know i've heard of utilities (can't remember the name at the moment) that let you query the motherboard sensors to check on the temp of various parts of your PC. Not sure if the motherboard in a laptop would have the same feature available. Maybe someone else can suggest a util.

yeah,i always make sure that the vents have plenty of air flow around them.i have managed to use dvd decrypter to get the disc on to my hard drive but no matter which version of dvd shrink i use i get the same shut down problem,im kinda new to this and had this question moved from the newbie section...which other program can i try to shrink the files??
cheers and sorry for the dumb question,i have looked at the guides and tried a few programs mentioned there but none of them look as easy to use and most need paying for, which i dont mind at all as long as they work!!

Maybe DVDShrink is using the processor and/or memory more extensively than clone DVD (using more assembler optimizations or something...)
Even your problem seems to be solved, you could always run into more stability problems as soon as you're using optimized programs like avisynth (probably heat-related, but it could be the CPU as well as memory or chipset).
If you're pragmatic, you don't care - but I'm a cooling enthusiast and I couldn't sleep knowing a certain program won't run stable on my PC... :)
