View Full Version : Difference between Real Media Encoders?

As there are plenty of tools that allow a video to be converted into the "Real Media Video" Format, I have to ask myself: whats the difference?

The original Real Producer 10 (as used in lots of guis) has the maximum of features possible but is also kinda slow :(

What about OSS Video Converter or fx video converter... do they produce the same quality? (they are at least faster!)

Does anyone of you REALLY know?

Hi, I don't know these other "converters", but if they in fact convert to RealVideo and not only from, they must be using some kind of RealVideo encoder grabbed from the Producer SDK. No one has made a RealVideo encoder except RealNetworks. If these converters can encode RealVideo faster than Producer 10, it means they are using an older codec like RV8 or RV9. You get speed, but sacrifice quality. That is always a trade-off. You can do the exact same with Producer 10, either by choosing codec name, or "EHQ level" as exposed in some of the GUIs. For instance, RV10 takes about 3-4X longer than RV9 for a 1-pass encode, and 1.5X longer for 2-pass. RV10 encoding is roughly the same speed as XviD encoding with VHQ Mode Decisions.
