I think audio was not properly muxed with video and hence no required output file.

hmm, yeah, ok i see that, but (and theres always a but) why? when i did the dvd2avi, it created 4 ac3 files, namely:
Underworld AC3 T01 3_2ch 448Kbps DELAY 0ms.ac3
Underworld AC3 T02 3_2ch 448Kbps DELAY 0ms.ac3
Underworld AC3 T03 2_0ch 192Kbps DELAY 0ms.ac3, and
Underworld AC3 T04 2_0ch 192Kbps DELAY 0ms.ac3. not really knowing which to choose, i chose the first one, assuming this was the english track, as that is usually the listing protocol for such things (at least as i understand it) this file is listed in the log and is 388 megs in size. so, i dont get the problem. anyone?

have you tried manually open avi file in VDubMod and adding AC3 track, then saving into new AVI ?

hmm, well, i will try that the next time it happens, if it does. for now though, i already did a complete re-encode with identical settings, and it worked. so, i dont know what happened. I cant rule out one of my 4 rug rats having anything to do with it. thanks for the reply and the suggestion

I have a guess: failure from something such as a full disk drive. You're on WinXP, so you could check the logs (Event viewer) to see if an error was logged 5/26 at 1:42:10.

yeah, i thought that at first too, that was my first guess actually, but i have like 47 gig free on the target drive. the only thing i can think of is in the xvid codec advanced settings tab, motion search do-hickey thingy, i chose "5 very high" on both passes the time it failed, and "6 ultra high" on the times it didnt. i dont know, that shouldnt mean a damn thing, i'm thinking it was just a fluke, or, like i said, one of my rugrats deleted it and my norton protected recycle bin never got it since it would be too big for the recycle bin and it was permenantly deleted. hard to say, not knowing :p
