Hi,

I have 2 questions. Firstly, what is the best/cheapest way to extract audio from a type 1 file. Secondly, if you have a type 2 file and edit the audio, then transfer the file back to tape with programs such as WinDV, DVIO or Scenalyzer, is the audio stream used the edited one, or is it the original "iavs" one, the "auds" stream just being stripped out.

Use your editing software (NLE). There should be an option to save a WAV file.

A type-2 file should have a "vids" and an "auds" stream, where the "vids" stream contains video and audio intermuxed. That means you have the audio twice. The "vids" stream of a type-2 DV file should contain the same data as the corresponding "iavs" stream of a type-1 DV file.

A type-1 file should a single "iavs" stream with video and audio intermuxed.

I assume - although I don't know for sure - that the audio from the "vids" stream is used if you send the file to your camcorder's DV-in. So I further assume that your editing software should not only modify the "auds" stream, else you won't benefit from your edits (the unaltered audio is used). If you edit the audio in a type-2 file from within an NLE, both audio streams should be modified in the same way.

Convert your DV Type 1 file to a Type 2 file, that way you can open it in VirtualDub and extract as a WAV. Simple
