View Full Version : Can You Use DVD Shrink On A Shrink...?

Out of curiosity I tried to backup one of my backups and it didn't work. I can still back up the original but not the copy.

I also notice DVD Shrink will not make copies of DVDs made from home movie sources.

What is the best program to make copies of non commercial DVDs? Or is there a setting that will allow DVD Shrink to make copies of non commercial DVDs?

Hi and welcome to the forum!

I'm guessing that non-commercial dvd's you're talking about are the single layer regular DVD's you can buy at the store. If that's the case you can do a direct 1:1 copy without the need for DVD Shrink. All you would need is DVD Decryptor, and do a "Mode->Iso->read" (in DVD Decrytpor) then with the .iso file it creates do a "Mode->Iso->write" in Dvd Decryptor and burn your dvd.

OK dumb question. What do I use to burn the copy? Will DVD Decryptor also do the burn?

Yes DVD Decryptor allows you to burn the resultant .iso file. All you need to do is while in DVD Decryptor, go to Mode, Select ISO->write, and then browse to where the .iso file is saved on your hard disk and then burn it.

OK just tried DVD Decryptor with the same results.

Like DVD Shrink it kept getting errors.

This ONLY occurs if I try and make copies of my DVD Shrink backups or my DVDs made on TMPGE DVD Author.

If I try and copy a commercial DVD then DVD shrink will make a copy with no problems. But I cannot make copies of the copy or of my own home movies on DVD.

I need a way to copy those.

unfortunately it is sounding like a problem with the original media you used.
i would hazard to guess that the errors you are receiving in DVD Decrypter are a due to bad sectors, which are a result of poor quality media or scratches/dirt on the dvd surface.

you could try opening the dvd in explorer and copying all files/folders onto your hard drive then use Imgtool Classic to create an iso image for DVD Decrypter to burn, or using whatever to burning software you use to create a new dvd of these files.
although i would be of the opinion that this new back-up of your back-up will also contain the same read errors regardless of your media

Could you elaborate a bit on the opening the DVD in explorer? I'm kinda a newbie still. Is explorer a program or an option of DVD Shrink or DVD Decryptor?

no worries - i actually meant windows explorer (i am assuming you are running a windows os)

1. load dvd
2. open file explorer for your computer
3. highlight the dvd, go to 'file' > 'open'
4. select all contents of the dvd (should contain a VIDEO_TS folder and an AUDIO_TS folder - though dont worry if the audio folder is not present)
5. copy contents to a new folder on your hard drive.
6. burn copied files to new dvd using dvd burning software or as previously noted, use ImgTool Classic to create an iso image (guides and program avaliable from doom9 main page links.

Gotcha.

If I copy past the files to my drive will I then be able to use DVD Decryptor for the burn assuming I can load the files from my hard drive?

ermmm ... no

sorry i should have been more descriptive. DVD Decrypter will only burn a .iso image file.

to create th e.iso image file you need to use an application like ImgTool Classic
please read this guide:
Burning DVDs (http://www.doom9.org/index.html?/mpg/dvdburn.htm)
good luck

Gotcha.

Also looks like you were right about it being a media issue.

I have been using TDK 4x DVDs. I recently started using Memorex 4x and was able to backup a backup using Shrink.

I'm trying to copy the TDK backups to my drive and will attempt to burn by the alternate method you suggested.
