A music database like imdb (movies)

If you've never heard of imdb, it's a movie database of (at least) all the known movies. You can visit it here (http://www.imdb.com)
I've been looking for a music database (albums, artists, a brief history of the group..) and I haven't found anything similar to imdb.
Does anybody know a web-site like that?

well it's not for all kinds of music, but if you're looking for electronics discogs (http://www.discogs.com) or wolfs kompaktkiste (http://www.kompaktkiste.de/) are pretty good resources.
