View Full Version : Problems converting DVD to SVCD

I use DVD2SVCD to backup my dvd. No problems with the first convertions (for the first 3-4 films). Now I've found lot of problems converting films (last one is "The last samurai"). After 30 minutes of good play the player seems to "loose" the track: the counter goes on, but no new frames comes up and a strong noise comes from the player.

I tried changing cdrom sopport but the problem stays in the same position (the same minutes and seconds in the counter).

I tried re-encoding the film but nothing changed.

In the dvd internal player of my pc I found no problems at all.

Some infermation about my system:

DVD player is Sony DVP-NS305 firmware : 1.902

What can I do?

thanks

Stefano

hi and welcome to the forum!

did you change the media by any chance? or perhaps try reducing the burning speed!

anyway :logfile: would probably help ;)

cheers

Here I attached the log file.

And.. about the media: I used Traxdata media, Philips media and I tried on a CD-RW bulk media... no change!

moving the thread to dvd2svcd basics forum...

Your log looks OK to me.

Since it plays back OK on your PC, an incompatibility may have arised with your player. I don't personally know your model, but please search on www.vcdhelp.com database to see which restrictions it has. Then report back.

I have experienced similar problems with certain media. My PC plays it perfectly but my standalone does not. This has been particularly notorius with some RW media, which lasts only "a few burns".

I tried converting the same dvd (the last samurai, i.e.) with the trial copy of #1 DVD ripper. After burning the *mpg file on the SAME cdrw media, it worked.

So I don't think the problem is the media, neither my stand alone dvdplayer. I suppose it's something "inside" the code.

For esample I saw that deselecting the flag for the sound dawnsample form 48kHz to 44kHz, my player has problems.

Thanks

Stefano

OK, Now I suspect a muxing error. Try to rip the muxed MPEG files from the images created by DVD2SVCD (the .bin files). A good and easy tool to do this is VCDEasy. If the file can be ripped to the end with no error, then muxing was OK (you can compare the size of the ripped file with the original muxed one). Please report back.

Ok. I'll try to re-mux the file. Now I'm downloading VCDEasy.

Sorry for the stupid question, but I'm a rookie:

Should the file I obtain from VCDEasy be burned as usual or is there any other program to use before burning?

Thanks

Stefano

Should the file I obtain from VCDEasy be burned as usual or is there any other program to use before burning? The file you will obtain by ripping from the SVCD image is not to be burned again. I only suggest you to rip it to see if it was properly muxed. VCDEasy will sort of undo the image creation done by DVD2SVCD, but if the ripping turns out OK then it was not a muxing problem, and then we'll see what to do next.

I hope this makes my suggestion more clear.

Hi.

I tried muxing the bin file. The bbMPEG_Muxed_File00 file is 813700 Kb and the avseq01 is 813700 Kb.

I also made a new try using D2SRoBa plugin: the position (=the time) where the player stops changes but .. it stops.

So, I think.. no news.

I've tried re-ripping the same film using the D2SRoba plug-in but forcing to use 3 disks.

It worked!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well now a question: can somehow be a problem of "compression"? can be a too deep compression that the standalone dvd player cannot afford?

If this is the solution, how can I " force" the dvd2svcd to use only percentage of this compression?

Thanks for your help.

Stefano

(I had this idea considerind that the

"D2Sroba" output were 2 full disks: not working
"DVD2SVCD stand alone: 3 disks not full: not working
#1 DVD ripper: 4 disks not full: working)

r6d2

Yes, what you thought of is possible. Some players have probems with too high or too low bitrates, the latter is the case of an overcompressed movie. Please take a look at the specs of your player at the site I pointed out. Other people may be having the same problems as you.

Is it possible to define the bitrate instead of the number of disks?

How can I do it?

Thanks

With DVD2SVCD alone you can limit the Min and Max, as well as the average. You don't seem to have followed my advice (which I gave you twice already) to look for your player's other user reports. So I did it for you. I found that several users reported failures to read SVCDs. Others say it works OK and give some hints. Apparently this Sony model does not support SVCDs with every firmware version. You might check with Sony the status of this regarding your particular player. You might even get an upgrade for free.

Yes, I already did what you told me.

I didn't report the result because it was (in my opinion) a non result:

I saw that there can be a incompatibility with oldest firmware, but I have a NEW one (a firmware that seems to be compatible with svcd) as I wrote in my first post.

Plus I saw that in the vcdhelp page none of contributors declared a lower bit rate value. Only an high value of more or less 2600-3000.

In the sony page and in the documentation NOTHING is reported.

I wrote to sony with no answer.

I think that saying this.. I add nothing interesting to solve the case.

That's why I directly asked if there was a way to set the bitrate value:
i don't know if this is a solution, but I probably should try to know the answer.

Bye

Stefano

If you want to experiment, try setting the Min, Max and Min Avg values on the Bitrate tab of DVD2SVCD (use the FAQ and guides for tips and meaning). You may end up with a last image that is shorter that the others, but at least you'll be able to tell of the problema was BR related.

Don't use D2Sroba for now.

Please post your results.

Well, I made lot's of experiment with many films: the bitrate for my sony needs to be "high". I saw that I have to store no more than 40 min in each cd.

So, if the film is 2 hours long, I have to use 3 cd. In this way it seems I've found the solution.
