best methg of encoding dv video to xivd

recently captured some video from my dv camera onto my pc and would like to convert it into xvid format.
I tried divx but that came out really bad (all blocky). I'm using Premiere Pro btw.

I tried opening the captured avi files in virtualdub but it wont open them.
what program should i use to convert these files to xvid.
PPro doesnt seem to want to work properly when using xvid (it crashes).

is there an error message when opening the file in VDub? perhaps all you need is a DV codec?

Couldnt locate decompressor for format 'dvsd' (unknown).

what do i need?

just get a DV codec from above link, any of them would be ok i think.

Panasonic DV is free i believe

where do i copy the panasonic dv codec .dll file to?
pdvcodec.dll

thanks for that, works a treat.

one more thing...VirtualDub doesnt allow one to append avi files together if one file has a different sampling rate than the other (among other things).
Since i have five dv avi files to convert to xvid, what do u reckon is the best way to join these files as one avi file (in xvid format)?

depends, are you talking about audio sampling rate or video frame rate? (last one seems weird seems DV is either PAL or NTSC if im right...)

both, audio and video frame rate.
first clip has 32khz second has 48khz.
one clip also has a different frame rate, .00something or other difference, very minor.
video is PAL.

but i guess thats not too big a problem. i can always conver the 32 into a 48.

ive heard of a program called AVI-Joiner, will that do the trick?

dunno, never tried that tool.

you could also use video-->framerate-->convert to fps
and save with 'direct stream copy', (you can convert the sample rate of the wav audio at the same time if you want)

this way you will drop/duplicate a few frames, but i doubt this would be very noticable.

you could also dive in to avisynth and use 'assumefps'(with changing audio rate too) together with (un)aligned splice to append them, this will require a little bit more work but result might be better as you will have 0 dropped or duplicated frames.

maybe you should do a search for appending or joining avis on this forum, must have been dealt with before id say :)
