View Full Version : AMD Speed

Hello everyone.
The question is this.. i am a proud owner of an AMD 2800+ CPU, but i've noticed that the actual speed of my CPU is actually of only 2.09mHz. I found this strange and i would expect it to be a bit more high, since i've seen a lot of people with lower CPU's that have more real CPU speed.
I have an Asus A7N8X-E Deluxe mobo and 2x512MB Kingston PC3200 Dual Channel DDR Memory (running at 333mHz).

after about the 2500+ range amd started to do various things to their processors that does increase the performance but also kept them from having to increase the speed as well. For example, there are some 2800+ processors that run on a 333mhz FSB, or they changed the cache on it from a normal 256k to 512k. In some cases the additions help out greatly and the rating increase is valid, but in others they may perform slightly worse. they are what they say they are overall however.
hi and welcome to the forum.
i didn't quite get your question, but u got the 1st fact right. amd has a 'performance rating' (PR) for their CPUs. it doesn't state MHz, but estimated performance of the cpu when comparing to the intel counterpart (P4 2.8). it usually works quite well. due to a more efficient cpu architecture, they can run at lower MHz, but give comparable performance overall.
btw, intel is starting to use PR too, since MHz is not enough these days.
i'm sure you'll be able to find more info by googling for 'performance rating amd'
cheers

So.. i shouldn't botter with the real cpu speed right?
I like my cpu the way it is and i dont have intention of overclocking it. :)
Btw, can someone recommend me a nice CPU heatsink?
I want one that makes almost no noise but still can cool down the cpu when doing "heavy stuff".

I have this Heat sink on my AthlonXP 2100+ http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=370450
It dropped the CPU temp from 125F-130F(stock heat sink) to 105F-110F(vantec areoflow). (110F being extremely rare.) The best part is it does all that while being quieter. The only concern would be the diff in our CPUs. Yours may require more then this heat sink, but I bet not.
Check out this review and see what you think.

The ultimate air cooler would probably be http://www.frostytech.com/articleview.cfm?articleID=1518
This one costs a bit more http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=371003 and may not be need unless you do some mild OCing with your CPU.
And to confuse you even more, the Athlon64 2800+ runs at 1.8 Ghz :D
One of the best HSF (quiet and performs very well) is the Zalman
CNPS7000A-Cu

http://www.thermaltake.com/coolers/volcano/rs/a1889a.htm this is a pretty good one too. it puts out around 20db. I got a 2100+ and a 2800+ running on these both in the lower 40s.

that seems to be a nice heatsink. Fan Speed 2450±10% RPM
the zalman has slower rpm's. then i guess its more silent than the thermaltake.
Ryokurin: you have that thermaltake? what do you think of the noise?
is it silent? cause i want a silent one. i want to leave my pc turned on but i want silence so i can sleep :D

That's the actual clockspeed of the 2800+, in terms of 'megahurts'. I also have the same proc, a Barton core. Don't be carried away by all these 'megahurts is everything' syndrome, a processor's actual performance is more than that. That's why there's a Performance Rating initiated by AMD, after Intel set out to worship clockspeed over efficiency.
As for heatsink and fan, I am using Thermalright SP-97 heatsink (http://www.pcabusers.com/reviews/thermalright/sp97/p1.html) and Enermax 92mm Speed-Adjustable Fan. (http://www.directron.com/uc9fab.html) You might want to check those out. At 1200-2500RPM, you'll have full control on noise and speed levels.

If I am not mistaken, the really dangerous range of temperatures for Athlons would start from around 170 degrees Fahrenheit, eh ? That would be about 80 degrees Centigrade.
