Guys,

I am new to DVD-RB. Does Half D-1 mean that the extra will be shown on TV at half size, or will the be stretched to fit the TV.

Thanks A Million

Half-D1 means the resolution will be halved horizontally but NOT vertically. And in your standalone it will be stretched (horizontal pixels doubled) back to its real aspect ratio.

If you have slightly blurry extras (as they often are) you wont notice any difference, but will save some bitrate for the main movie.

The player should stretch it to the proper AR on playback. Although, I've heard about some players that don't stretch the image, or display the image twice, side by side, or that display the image correctly but mash the subtitles. Just try it and see if it works for you (it probably will).

Edit: beaten. Here's some examples of the quality. 1st image is full 720x480 stretched to 16x9. Second is half 352x480 stretched to 16x9.

I've read of that too but half-d1 is a part of the DVD Standard so it MUST work or you should scratch the DVD logo off the face of the player. Also people mistake the Xbox for a hardware player :) The PS2 didnt have problems though from my own tests (then again it decodes with an MPEG2 chip, though the stretching is without bilinear filtering so its a tad pixelated upclose).
