Gordian Knot and Auto Gordian Knot are Encoding Suites. That is, they are used to convert MPEG-2 Video and optionally, several types of audio, into more compressed forms, and into AVI containers. They include bitrate calculation, the generation of AviSynth scripts, and both audio and video encoders, and between them, support the use of 3 MPEG-4 codecs: DivX 3.11 Alpha, DivX 5, and XviD (releases vary between GK and AGK at the moment). See http://www.doom9.org/divx-encoding.htm for more information.

ffdshow, on the other hand, is a decompression-only codec, able to decode many MPEG codecs. There is a VFW codec that includes compression, known as ffvfw. See http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow/ for more information.

And there is nothing that makes GK, AGK, or ffdshow the best (see Rule 12 for why that's the case).

GK includes ffdshow.

You've been warned before about Rule 9 as well. I've taken the liberty of changing your title to be more descriptive. Please re-read the rules, and feel free to PM me if any of them are confusing to you.

FFDshow isnt even a codec, it's more a decompression suite.
libavcodec is the codec used by FFDshow (if you dont want to use XviD that is) to decode.
