Am I interpreting the below Article correctly, found today at cdr-info and a similar one at cd-freaks. It seems that Lite-On has a 8X dual layer burner. Now I am wondering if they just mean its an 8X burner with the standard 2.4X speed dual-layer burning or do thay actually mean 8X dual-layer burning? I find it hard to believe we have jumped from 2.4X all the way up to 8X and Dual-layer is not even released yet here in the states and 2.4X media is just being released. Is there even a spec approved for 8X DL media?

Has anyone have more info on this?

From cdr-info:

Lite-On launches 8x Dual DL and 12x Dual DVD burners
Wednesday, 19 May 2004

Lite-On IT will launch two new DVD burners today through its Taiwan general sales agent, Gish International, for sale on the Taiwanese market. The products are an 8x DVD Dual DL (single-sided double-layer disc) burner and a 12x DVD Dual burner.

According to Digitimes.com, a few local makers already claim to offer 8x DVD+RW DL burner models, but Lite-ON IT’s 8x DVD Dual DL is also compatible with the –RW format, and will sell at prices of US$229-239 per burner.

the 8x drives are dual layer.. the 12x sounds like a single layer dual format to me. 12x burners that do dual layer are still a few months off (I think July at the earliest).

8x onto a DL disc? That doesnt sound right to me (writing DL is a delicate process). Also why skip the 4X phase and make less money out of the new format?

This part also raises suspicion: "a few local makers already claim to offer 8x DVD+RW DL burner models, but Lite-ON IT’s 8x DVD Dual DL is also compatible with the –RW format"

They either claim it writes 8X ALSO on -RW or is just (vaguely)compatible unlike the competition, making me wonder if the *amazing* 8X in this whole deal means infact 8X writing for +RW/-RW (which also is suspicious cause no such discs exist or have been announced).

Maybe the mighty Lite-On PR department got their 8X/12X/DL/+RW/-RW mixed up.

just to make that clear... every dual layer drive is limited to 2.4x. We'll see 4x at the end of the year at the earliest. So the LiteOn, BenQ and Sony drives are all 8x DVD±R, 4x DVD±RW, and 2.4x DVD+R DL. That much I can actually guarantee you.

Thanks for the clarifiaction. I think it's just that 8X for single layer write-once media is "old news" for us so we expect those numbers to apply to other formats like rewritable or even dual layer :)

btw: Thanks for the great site and forums Doom9, I love 'em.

with a DL burner,
will it be possible to simly copy a dvd-9 disk?

i noticed the DL burners are only +dvdr and I remember reading along time ago that -DVDR had better compatibility with Stand alone players.
does that still hold true?

although, i've burned many dvd-r's and distributed them to people who can't get them to work properly on their dvd players.

thanks for the info,

Yes its possible to do a 1:1 copy (decrypt, drag to nero6, burn). Yes I would assume that when DVD-R DL comes around it has been tested and finetuned more than DVD+R DL, and it will work a little better.

Well, I convert VHS and DV home videos into DVD-R for some clients, and I've never had an unworking disc. I test with 4 different players, and read-test the discs in a dvd-rom drive.

So your problems have to be a problem with your dvd media (bulkcrap, princo etc discs are not good) or method of authoring. :)

interesting. thank you joergen.

the media i am using is fuji dvd-r. i was aware that cheap media would cause problems so i avoided it. do you know if fuji disks are not reputable?

as for the authoring: i encoded my movie with CCE and authored the dvd with scenarist. there are a few motion menues and chapters - a pretty standard design.

the disks work on my home sony dvd player. people have reported that they try and watch them and the movie stops half way through, or it won't play at all.

but, other people have been able to use the disks with no problem.

i just recieved a "problem" disk that was returned to me and it seemed to play fine in my sony dvd player.

what do you think about that?
