I've been working with dvd shrink for a while now and have had no problems, however when backing up I keep getting a message 'this disc is 'rce' protected. if you select the correct intended region dvd shrink shall back up'...or something to that effect. When i get this message i tend to use dvd decrypter to back-up, then put it through dvd shrink. It works fine but takes just a bit too long!!. Any suggestions on how to overcome this small problem?

It's not a problem at all. It just asks you to provide the disc's region, that is the one printed on the DVD case. DVD Decrypter takes that number from the drive's configuration, so it doesn't have to ask you.
In short words, if you're making a backup of R1 DVD, select Region 1 in DVD Shrink, and that's it.

Is it true that this RCE protection stops a DVD from being played in a "regionless" or multi region DVD player?
I ask as it has been deemed illegal in Australia, to enforce DVD regions, under our trade practices act as it stiffles competition.
This could be why I have never come across it here.

Yes that is in fact true... I got one R1 disk with RCE which cannot be played on my RPC1 patched DVD-rom. the only way of watching the DVD for me is to either change one of my dvdroms to R1 or to rip the DVD in advance...

In case you're curious, this is how that RCE protection works. The DVD itself is marked as "regionless" so that any player starts playing it. Then somewhere in IFO files there is a script that checks the region of the player stored in SPRM20. If it doesn't exactly correspond to the desired region printed on the DVD case, the IFO brings up a menu saying "Invalid region" and halts.
Programs like DVD Shrink or DVD Decrypter search for such commands and replace the player's region variable (SPRM20) with a constant, so the comparison always works. However, DVD Shrink has to as you, what's the real region of the DVD printed on the case. DVD Decrypter I suppose reads this value off your DVD drive.
If you got a multizone standalone, in order to play RCE protected discs you have to go to the "secret menu" and switch the player's region from 0 to the disc's region. Naturally, mostly R1 DVD are protected this way.

Only on some players. I have a few RCE R1 discs and my Kiiro X8 player plays them without even blinking. So best to check this feature before splashing out on a multi-region player!
