Excuse the possible off-post, but this may help someone else as well.
Have a strange problem driving me nuts the last week, and I ...think... it may be DivX caused. I live on a boat, anchored, with no Inet. Nonetheless, I do encode DivX, currently using GK Rip Pack 28.8. I'm running a legit copy of WXP SP1, activated via phone from work.
The problem is that the Gain/Gator installed by DivX Pro 5 is continuously trying to acces the IExplorer, specifically IP 127.0.0.1: port 1076. It has rendered my computer worthless. Even after removing via a Spybot "Search and Destroy" mission, the dialer still tries to connect! It will do this sometimes 50 times in a row, interrupting all other programs. It also presses random keys on the keyboard, and if I am in the middle of copying files, it will STOP the copying process, then try to dial. Even when the "Search and Destroy" process is complete, the bug will load on TOP of it and try to connect to the Inet!!
Has the latest GK/DivX Pro package really become this invasive? I have un-installed the GK package, but the problem still occurs. I have deleted IE, Messenger, turned off auto updates in WXP, but this program STILL tries to connect!! The sticky at the top of this forum for removing the gain tickler does NOT work.
I did not have these problems before I went to the latest GK, but there is still a slight possibility that it could have come from another program. I have never been so tempted to throw the whole lot overboard...
Any ideas?
