Has anyone tried to use the hacked firmware to upgrade from single to dual layer? (slashdot article Linked (http://slashdot.org/articles/04/05/18/038248.shtml?tid=137&tid=164&tid=185&tid=198) )

I know pioneer proved this as a proof of concept at the last big show using an older 4X burner and upgrading the firmware. Just curious if anyone has done it yet and if it works (and what it works on).

here are some results: http://www.cdrinfo.com/forum/tm.asp?m=66772&mpage=1&key=%F0%90%93%94

As for the 106/A06 I have to disappoint you. It was later found out that Pioneer did modify the hardware of the burner they showed so if you own the 106/A06, better bury hope and wait for the A08 which will come out this summer and can handle dual layer discs.

damn. and here I was hoping I wouldn't have to buy any new hardware for awhile yet.

You wouldn't. Doom9 has advised you to wait; it'll be prudent to wait till the dust settles. You see, these DVD burners are new stuff, and a lot of development is going on. You buy now, and next week something comes out that'll make you bite your hands. Unless, of course, you have a lot of money to buy all new gizmos as they arrive on the Radio Shack shelves.

It's only eight months till 2005. At the risk of sounding like a grandpa, I'd say wait.

What about Sony?
I got a Sony DVD+RW DW-P50A, is there any new firmware to convert it into dual layer? or it's just a dream?

You can take a look at this (http://codeguys.rpc1.org/firmwares.html) page, this (http://slashdot.org/articles/04/05/18/038248.shtml?tid=137&tid=164&tid=185&tid=198) page, or similar ones. Please search and find.

here's a list of can's and can'ts. Basically, if it's not an 8x burner and a 2004 model, you're on the looser streak already.. and if it is, chances are still very low. So hope seems a waste of effort ;)
