View Full Version : Fast TV encoding to be reencoded - quantisizer or bitrate ?

Short question:
---------------

Imagine yourself fast low compression 384*288 resolution XviD TV-capturing (slow CPU) with limited space 4GB/2GB
for a movie /2 movies .

According to AVI quality, is better to set bitrate ( 1500-4000),
or quantisizer with similar average target size ?

Or, in other way, is better constant quant (e.g. 4), or
variable quant. (e.g. 2-7) acc. to changes in scene compressibility ?

File is intended for farther 2pass 1CD max quality reencoding.

Longer problem and HW/SW description:

I use Xvid for TV-capturing on underpowered PC:

HW: ( Celeron 600/66, Intel440ZX based mboard, 192 MB SDRAM ,
4GB free disk space , Nvidia TNT2 M64 graphic card,
Leadtek 2000XP Expert PCI TVcard)
It seems not to be worth to upgrade but for another disk.
There are no money for new PC upgrade yet.

SW: Win98SE, Leadtek Winfast PVR TV application,
Koepi Xvid 1.0.0 RC4, VirtualDub 1.5.10

I do encoding in 2 steps:

1st step is fast half resolution realtime encoding:
(PCM audio ,res 384*288, turbo, H263,
MSP3(-4), VHQ0, no chroma, no BVOP )
BR usually 1500-2000kb/s or Quant 3-5

It is my researched trade off between CPU demand
and free disk space ( usually 2per movie, max 4GB).

2nd step is only for archieving purposes ( if movie worth it ):
I use 2pass 700MB target CD size encoding
(BVOP,MSP6,VHQ1(-4),chroma,adapt quant)
with audio MP3 encoding ( VirtualDub 1.5.10)


I did not find an answer in any XviD related FAQs.

( If you see anything else worth to comment,
I encourage you to do it, I am glad in advance to see your advise,
opinion or (slight :-) ) criticism. )
