cce basic 2.69 and DV

I am trying to convert VHS (PAL) to DVD. Method of capture, plug camcorder into back of vidio press record. I have used Pinicle 9 to capture and edit the vidio from the camcorder and want to use cce to code the avi. (well I bought it so I want to use it) I'm using ulead dvd workshop 2 to author the dvds. Initialy I used sonic my dvd but cept getting an error mesage about the data rate being to high for dvd.

So far I have succesfully authord 7 beermats.

The settings I use are
dvd - picked
2 pass vbr
Pal is selected
min bit rate 2000
ave bit rate 4000
max bit rate 8000
Quality off
in the vidio section
M=3
N/M = 4
Add sequence end code is selected
Progressive frame Not selected
top field first not selected
off set line 0 (i think i tryed this at 1 as well)
intra DC 10
Block scan order alternate
luminance 16-235
packet size 2048

The problem I get is jumpy frames expecialy with motion
any ideas?

Welcome to the forum.

Your video is probably top field first (tff), so try to select the top field first option. As your source is VHS, it's likely that the field order is the problem. DV is usually bff, but in your case I assume you have tff video from the very beginning.

You can leave the rest of the options as you described. Keep the offset line setting at 0, else you'd change the field order. This is only relevant if you want to encode tff video as bff or vice versa. I wonder if you might get slightly better results with a DC precision of 9 when using an average bitrate of 4000 kbps. You can try that, if you like and have the time.

OK, gave it a go with the new setting and got some intresting results

A bit more back ground
My stand alone player is a European region 2 multi format player, It has two settings PAL or NTSC. (It will not play region 1 DVDs)
My camcorder is a Panasonic and uses PAL.
I capture using Pinnacle Studio V9 to produce the AVIs
Pinnacle is set up for PAL
I tryed Sonic MY DVD 4.5 for authoring it is set up for PAL.

When I use Pinnacle or Sonic to code the MPEGs the output on the DVD is PAL
When I use CCE Basic 2.69 the output appears to be NTSC

(I presume it is NTSC because the picture has no strobe affect on the DVD Player when NTSC is selected )

The strange thing is that in the Video settings section of CCE Basic 2.69 I have a radial button that is flagged as PAL. (you can't change this button)

The settings I used for testing last night were

Video Section
dvd - picked
2 pass vbr
Pal is selected (automatically can't change it)
min bit rate 2000
ave bit rate 4000
max bit rate 8000
Quality off
IN the advanced video section
M=3
N/M = 4
Add sequence end code is selected
Progressive frame Not selected
top field first selected
off set line 0
intra DC 9
Block scan order alternate
luminance 16-235
packet size 2048

Any one got any ideas?

Check "Progresive frame" !!!

This will solve motion flickering.

Trust me, it works, I had exactly the same problem twice, and this solved it.

I sent this problem to the CCE people, I just got a replie to day they want to see the clips to find out for them selfs whats happening I will fire off some clips to them tomorrow and update the forum with what they advise.

Settings for DV material in CCE
(DV=interlaced-source Bottom field first) most of the time

this is for 2.5 but is almost the same for 2.69

Activate "add sequence end code'
Activate "upper field first"
Deactivate "Progressive frames"
Activate "Linear quantizer scale"
Deactivate " zigzag scanning order"

(for 2.69 upperfield first has been replaced by Offsetline=1(active))
(check the cce faq ->Q11)
Your case:

Video Section
dvd - picked
2 pass vbr
Pal is selected (automatically can't change it)
min bit rate 2000
ave bit rate 4000
max bit rate 8000
Quality off

sorry for not getting back with my attempts, I went the lazy road and encoded using other meens, however tonight I will try again with CCE and post my results by the end of the week.

Well Last night I tried Msc_Alex's settings and success, I finaly got a realy nicely encoded bit of footage, no jumps, no need to change the dvd player to NTSC, perfect in PAL. Thanks for all the help, now I can get down to some serious edditing. cheers guys!
