View Full Version : DTS surround?

I have tried to convert mp3 to DTS (out of divx movie). First I made a wav-file of the mp3 stream with Vdubmod. After that I used the upmixgui (great job!!!) to generate 6 mono wav files. I put those files into Surcode dvd pro and the result was a .dts file. I multiplexed the .dts file with the .m2v file with the help of dvdlab and the result was 5.1 dts sound...but there was no channel splitting of the sounds. To say in other words: All five speakers produced the same sound. So finally my question is: Is it possible to produce a true surround sound out of a mp3-track?
The upmix method (as used in my batch file, and I believe the GUI uses the same) does not do anything advanced to produce surround effect, the upmix method is more about producing sound in all five speakers, tuned based on typical speakers for each position. If you want to produce differing surround effects from stereo you should either
1) look into some of the more advanced bidule methods (read through the stereo > 5.1 guide sticky on this thread, there are some quite advanced methods and users involved)
2) engineer such audio effects yourself with audacity/cool edit, and the filters included with such programs

Oke thanks for your fast reply.
I already used the guide from EoH, but when I want to convert a moviesound-track I got a wav file of 3.2 Gb. Such a huge file is too big for Besweet because it crashed. Or is there a newer version of Besweet that doesn't crash? If there is one do you know if the method of EoH is cappable of introducing surround sound?

You are talking about special effects. Like Kpex said, you will have to engineer these yourself. "Surround Sound" is produced quite capably with the EoH method...and the others. But these methods were developed with music in mind, and musical surround sound is not necessarily descrete channeling and/or separation of the instruments, though each channel may be a little different than the other (in terms of frequencies and reverb) to fill the space in a sound sphere. :)
The MP3 file was multichannel with descrete speaker feeds? A gunshot from the front right landed in the left rear? You are talking cinematic audio effects, then. I haven't seen many discussions of that, least not here.

eddieprince: As far as I know, all BeSweet problems relating to large filesizes have been fixed. Make sure you're using the latest beta, and post your logfile if the crash persists.

Oke thanks for your replies. I will try again with Bidule and Besweet's latest version. I only have one question left. Will there be a time difference in the audio, because I don't want sync. problems. When I use the Upmixgui I don't have that problem, but when I use reverb I got a diffence in wav length. Do you have that problem too with Bidule?

erm, why not do a dolby pro-logic 2 upmix, for example with hypercube transcoder
