Hi.

I'm trying to unistall the panasonic dv-codec, but there is one problem: INF-files are associated with wordpad on my system. The result is that when I right click on the INF file, the contextual menu does not contain an install or uninstall option. How can I un-associate the INF-files?

thanks,

You inf file is not the codec. The codec dll files are usually stored in the Windows System folder.

If you want to uninstall a codec that does not have an uninstaller follow this method (Windows XP but Windows 9x is similar):

Go into the Device Manager in Windows. Click on "Sound, Video, Game Controllers". Under that select "Video Codecs", and right click and hit properties. Find the codec in the list and hit remove.

An information file (.inf) provides installation instructions that the Internet Component Download service provided in Microsoft Internet Explorer 3.0 or later uses to install and register software components downloaded from the Internet, as well as any files required by the components.
More information on .inf files can be found here (http://msdn.microsoft.com/library/default.asp?url=/workshop/delivery/download/overview/inf.asp). If you're still having a problem with the codec issue, give a shout, or run forum searches on "codec/s", you'll find many interesting returns for that keyword.

Thanks for the advice. I managed to unistall the codec via the device manager.

The codec DLL came with an INF-file that is used to install/register the codec. On other computers I have successfully installed the codec by right clicking on the INF file and choosing "Install" from the contextual menu. I think is has something to do with file associations, because INF-files are associated with wordpad on my system.

BTW, I'm running Windows 2000 SP4.

Could be, sometimes with software the .inf extension is used to indicate 'info', while this files are usually just .txt files. Maybe you or someone else has associated it with wordpad for this reason.

.inf doesnt allow you to uninstall a codec though, at least not with the ones I checked with earlier. But I think you could add such a command if you go to 'folders' in the control panel.
