Which one to choose??? Purchasing another Burner.

I have the Pioneer A06 DVR burner. For the most part it has not been bad at all. My question is this:

Will the LiteOne give the same quality as does the Pioneer, or are there other burners out there that will do as good of a job at backing up DVD's at a lesser cost than the Pioneer?

The drive would be used for DVD Backup only.

The nec2500a is meant to be very good and is possibly upgradeable for DL.

Agreed, the NEC ND-2500A looks like a good drive from an article I've read on it. http://www.anandtech.com/guides/showdoc.html?i=2014&p=7

On the above link, it takes you to Newegg.com. When I read the first review on that drive he states you need firmware to burn at 6x dvd-r.


I looked at the link, and from what I see, I would not need firmware. It appears that the version linked above burns dvd-r (Ritek G04) at 8x. Of course you would want to burn it at 6x max. Is this correct, or would you need the firmware because the burner will only allow what ever the disk tells it to burn at?

Being completely honest, I can not speak about this burner from direct experience. (I don't own one, YET) I also am not qualified to tell you wether you can burn a disc at whatever speed. I know from CD-burning that the rated speed is hardly what you end up getting. Seems to be the combination of CD/DVD choice and CD/DVDburner. This makes sense as most companies love to overrate their hardware using some obscure circumstances. The things we should be looking for here are stability, lifespan, compatibility, and speed being the lesser but still wanted factor. From what I can tell this drive should have them all. Nec usual makes good equipment, and according to anandtech (I think I read about it in maximim PC as well) this drive is a near top performer. Consider the price and you can't go wrong. If it sucks sell it to somone for $80.00, I'm sure you could get it. If you don't get a burner soon I can tell you more about this particular drive soon. One of my friends will be purchasing it very soon. One last thing: Do I REALY have to enable cookies just to look at your DVD collection link???

Of course this could just be a marketing stunt but I wouldn't take the chance :
On the Internet there is currently a Firmware version floating around that ought to change the usual 8x DVD burner ND-2500A to an ND-2510A that is able to write double layer media. According to NEC this Firmware does not work on the ND-2500A because some adjustments have to be made during the manufacturing process that cannot be applied later.

Because of this it will be impossible to let the ND-2500A write DVD+R DL only by upgrading the Firmware. Even if this will succeed in single cases, the danger of getting coasters is very high and the DL-recordables will have error ammounts beyond the specification.

NEC also points out that applying unofficial firmwares to their burners will void warranty.
